Laurel Mall Plan Still Being Tweaked

City officials continue to iron out plan for transportation hub.

The City of Laurel is continuing to fine-tune a conceptual plan that will turn the former Laurel Mall site into the Town Centre at Laurel, complete with a regional transit hub located somewhere on the property.

During last night’s Council meeting, a second public hearing on the developer's site plan was held and Council members pressed for more discussion on where the transit hob would be placed.

The plan submitted by the developer calls for the Central Maryland Regional Transit bus hub to remain toward the rear of the property along Fourth Street. But Council members have debated as to where, if at all, the hub should be on the property.

Robert DiPietro, who represents the developer, told the Council that discussion with CMRT on the placement of the hub was ongoing.

The Council will hold another hearing on the plan during a meeting on Oct. 10.

The new site will be smaller than Laurel Mall with about 400,000-square-feet of retail, as well as 435 residential units that are will sit near the intersection of Fourth Street and Cherry Lane Road.

The Centre will be anchored by a 12-screen movie theatre, a grocery and Burlington Coat Factory. The site also will include an open-air venue for concerts as well as outdoor dining.
