Laurel's Ward 1 Eyes Expansion

Committee recommends larger Ward 1 as part of Census review.

The City of Laurel’s voting Ward 1 could be getting a little bigger after a recommendation from the Census and Ward Boundary Review Committee.

The Laurel Leader is reporting the committee, which advises the Laurel Council, is recommending that Ward 1 be expanded south of Route 198, east of Van Dusen Road, north of Marton Street and West of Harrison Drive. Those areas currently sit in Ward 2 and would be moved into Ward 1 if the plan is backed by the Council.

The review comes as part of the latest U.S. Census data, which showed the Ward 2 population at 14,461 compared to Ward 1’s 10,646. Laws require that the voting population be close to equal.
