Prince George's Headlines: Possible Serial Rapist, Fatal Shooting, Murder Sentence

The Laurel City Council this week approved a measure to give more opporunities to local minority and women-owned businesses. Officials said the resolution was aimed at ensuring that local businesses had access to contract opportunities within the city.


After another sexual assault in the vicinity of the Northwest Branch Hiker/Biker Trail near the West Hyattsville Metro Station, the similarity of suspect descriptions has police thinking they might be dealing with a serial rapist. Yet, police do not have any evidence to link the assaults.


Deandre Ricardo Williams, who was charged in the fatal shooting of University of Maryland student Justin DeSha-Overcash in January 2011, was sentenced Wednesday to 49 years in prison for first-degree murder.

Upper Marlboro Teen Charged in VA Killing Was Out On Bond
A Virginia State University student from Upper Marlboro is being sought for the fatal shooting of a Petersburg, VA man last week near VSU's campus. He was out on bond awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to two robbery counts in Prince George's County.

Neighbors of the Cafritz property at the north end of Riverdale Park were surprised to see heavy machinery moving in this week, as the developer's 37-acre mixed use blueprint for the site is still pending before the District Council. The equipment turned out to be a soil boring machine extracting samples for testing, but its arrival was enough to anger several opponents of the project concerned that the Cafritz team was jumping the gun.
