Howard County Public Schools Delay Opening on Tuesday

Schools in Howard County altered their schedules as a result of the weather.

After a wintry mix fell overnight, all Howard County public schools are opening two hours late on Tuesday.

Morning pre-kindergarten and RECC programs are canceled, according to the Howard County Public School System.

All before-school care programs in Howard County public schools that are sponsored by the Columbia Association and Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will be delayed by two hours, the announcement said.

The Columbia Association reported there would be no programs, classes or activities held before 10:45 a.m., as the association's inclement weather policy was in effect.

Snow, sleet and rain were affecting the roads Tuesday morning, and officials with the Maryland State Highway Administration advised drivers to give themselves extra time to travel.

The Howard County Public School System noted that there may be intersections with large mounds of snow, and Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services Chief Bill Goddard encouraged parents to help their children on their way to school or the bus stop as they navigate snow and ice-covered sidewalks.

Overnight, at least one inch of snow fell in Howard County, according to unofficial snow totals from the National Weather Service Tuesday morning, on top of the heaps of snow already on the ground from the recent storm.

Schools in Baltimore, Harford and Cecil counties are on a two-hour delay, in addition to Howard County.
