Laurel Elementary To Reopen Monday

Two-thirds of the building will be occupied by students.

 

After at the start of the school year last month, students will be able to return to parts of the building on Monday.

Prince George’s County Public School that will increase the size of individual classrooms, eliminate open classrooms with no walls, and provide classrooms with new furniture, technology and equipment. The project is expected to wrap up next spring.

But on the eve of the new school year, parents were unexpectedly told that construction delays at the school would cause students to be displaced to Greenbelt Middle and Scotchtown Elementary schools for the first few weeks.  

The Gazette reports that on Monday, students will be able to occupy two-thirds of the building. All students will be expected back at the school next week with third and second graders occupying temporary classrooms outside the building, according to Melinda Lee, Laurel Elementary principal.

“The kids have been fantastic at following directions and being responsible,” she said to The Gazette. “And the parents have been very supportive. They saw how organized we were on the first day and felt good about the support we had from the whole school system.”
