Middle schoolers who want to pick up a new sport or join an afterschool team in Prince George’s County are in luck—starting this fall, middle school sports programs will return to county schools.
In the fall, students can join a baseball or softball team. Cheerleading and basketball will be offered in the winter and soccer in the spring.

Incoming sixth graders are automatically eligible for fall sports. To participate in winter and spring sports, sixth graders must have earned a 2.0 GPA from the previous grading period.
Seventh and eighth grade students must have a 2.0 GPA from the previous grading period to join fall, winter or spring sports.

Parents and students must complete athletics participation forms in order to join middle school sports teams. A physical exam is required for all student athletes.
Families should contact their child’s school for more information, including additional eligibility requirements, tryouts and practice schedules.
This will be the first time since 2011 that sports will be offered at county middle schools, according to the Gazette. Earlier this summer, the PGCPS Board of Education discussed reinstating middle school sports with additional funding.
