High School Sports: Laurel Prep Roundup

Moyer of St. Vincent Pallotti concludes strong swim season while Laurel High grads aim for a spot in March Madness.

The St. Vincent Pallotti High swim team, led by Kaitlyn Toth and Andria Moyer, took part in the Washington Metropolitian Interscholastic Swim and Dive championships Feb. 25-26 in Germantown.

Moyer set a personal best in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.15 and placed in 36th. Toth was 24th in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.68. She was also 29th in the 200-yard IM. 

The Pallotti relay of Ashli Taylor, Toth, Moyer and Ashley Cohee was 25th in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Toth, Taylor, Moyer and Cohee was 26th in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Alston has strong season

Will Alston, who led Laurel High to the 2008 Class 4A state semifinals at the University of Maryland, has had a strong season as a junior at Valdosta State in Georgia. He started 22 of the first 28 games and averaged 10.9 points (fourth on the team) and 6.5 rebounds per contest (second) for a team that was 19-8 overall. He played two years of Division I hoops at Jacksonville before transferring to Valdosta State, a Division II program.

Hampton aims for March Madness

Laurel High grads Milade Lola-Charles and Chris Tolson are aiming for a spot in the NCAA men's baskeball tournament as juniors with Hampton University. Tolson came off the bench in 20 of the first 27 games and averaged 14.3 minutes and 3.4 points per contest. Lola-Charles, a post player, played in 24 of first 27 games as a reserve and averaged 7.2 minutes and 0.7 points. The team won 19 of its first 27 games.

Laurel High girls fall at Wise

The Laurel High girls basketball team lost, 72-38, Tuesday, March 1 against Wise in the Class 4A South Region playoffs. Wise has been one of the top teams in the region throughout this season and they scored 31 points in the second quarter to put the game away. The Spartans were 7-16 this season.

Laurel High swimmers fare well

Laurel High's Jade Hill and Ryan Pauling were among the top 10 finishers in individual events in the state public school swim meet last weekend. Hill was fourth in the 100 breast and Pauling was sixth in the same event among boys.

Trimble with Maryland softball

Kelly Trimble, a 2010 graduate of St. Vincent Pallotti High, is a freshman on the roster with the University of Maryland softball team. She is listed as a catcher/first baseman. The Terps won six of their first 10 games.
