St. Vincent Pallotti Shortstop Hopes To Bounce Back

Isrin, only returning senior, hurt her right knee in a slide but wants to return to the field soon.

Allison Isrin, a senior at St. Vincent Pallotti High, walked slowly through the parking lot at Fairland Regional Park in West Laurel on Wednesday evening. Her team had just lost to Park, 14-1, and the Panthers certainly could have used her on-field leadership.

But Isrin, a three-year player, injured her right kneecap during a slide earlier this month and the game against Park was the second contest she has missed. "It is hard. I would like to play," said Isrin, the Pallotti captain. "We have a really young team."

Isrin is the only senior on the team who played for the Panthers in 2010. The only other senior on the roster is Jordyn Crockett, who transferred to the Laurel private school and played basketball this past winter for Pallotti.

Isrin, a shortstop, is the only member of the infield from last year who returned to the team from a year ago. The Panthers had to replace catcher Kelly Trimble (now at Maryland) and Karlyn Buker, now a pitcher/infielder for Division II Tampa in Florida.

Before the first regular-season game Pallotti's top pitcher, a freshman, was expelled from the school. The Panthers turned to Lyndsey Llewellyn, now the top pitcher as a sophomore.

The Panthers lost three of their first four games after dropping down from the A league to the B level in the IAAM. "We have had a lot of bumps. We have had bumps that have set us back," Isrin said.

Isrin transferred to Pallotti after her freshman year at a public school in Montgomery County. Now a senior, she did not suffer ligament damage on her right knee. She had an MRI earlier this week and hopes to return to the field soon. Isrin plans to play club softball at James Madison University in Virginia when she enters the school in the fall.

Laura Horstkamp, the first-year head coach for Pallotti, said the move from the A league to the B level made sense since she has such a young team this spring. And an injury to the only returning senior starter has also made the first part of the season more of a challenge.
