Riggleman's Blunder

A short analysis on Jim Riggleman's resignation.

Over the weekend, Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggleman unexpectedly resigned from his position with the team. This left the team with no real idea for what to do next.  So what do they do next? Hire a proven winner in Davey Johnson to lead the team in the foreseeable future.

Davey Johnson is only one of the many "old" managers that have been hired around the league recently. He won a World Series in the 80s with the New York Mets. He is now the manager of one of the hottest teams in baseball. The real question is, why did Riggleman quit?

Supposedly, Riggleman had been asking for a long-term contract for quite some time now, instead of the one-year deals he had been receiving for the past few years. It wasn't going to happen. The Nationals never really saw Riggleman as a long-term option for the team. His resignation just leaves him without a job and the team in even better position to be a contender in the future. For him, it was a stupid mistake. For the team? It was a dream come true.
