The Prince George's delegation is launching a work group this summer to determine how the liquor sales would be regulated.
Sunday Funday revelers may no longer have to leave Prince George's County to buy rum, tequila, vodka and other liquors on Sunday, if the county's representatives can agree on a method. The Prince George's County delegation announced it will be launching a work group to discuss and reach a concensus on how the sale of liquor would be regulated in the county. Currently, alcohol sales on Sundays are restricted to beer and wine stores that have licenses to be opened seven days of the week. Liquor, however, is not allowed to be sold. Del. Melony. G. Griffith will chair the group, which will have its first meeting Tuesday, May 14 at 6 p.m. in the Media Room of the County Administration Building on Governor Oden Bowie Drive in Upper Marlboro. "I …
Following the recent death of a man in an Alaska homeless shelter, the debate over “wet shelters” resurfaces from coast to coast.
Should alcohol be allowed to be consumed within Maryland's homeless shelters? That question is being debated in the wake of the death of a homeless man who died while allegedly intoxicated at a shelter in Alaska on New Year’s Day. According to an article in the Associated Press, it is believed that John Kort died in the Karluk Manor homeless shelter in Anchorage after passing out after he took a mixture of alcohol and pills. The news of Kort’s death has since sparked a nationwide conversation over the idea of “wet shelters,” or shelters like the Karluk Manor that don’t have a policy against drinking on premises. According to an article in the Atlantic, which includes opinions both for and against the idea of “wet shelters," Karluk is part …

In its first meeting of the year, the Savage Community Association (SCA) heard from two representatives of local liquor dispensaries against the 7 Star Food Mart acquiring a license to sell beer. Barring a postponement due to snow, the Howard County liquor board will hold a hearing in Ellicott City Tuesday evening about giving the license to the shop, in the name of storeowner Jamal Abdul Nasir. Martin Johnson, a state liquor license specialist, said the strongest arguments against the license are a lack of need, with nine other stores within 3.7 miles, and the Bethel Christian Academy campus being 303 feet away from 7 Star Food Mart. Howard County liquor law prohibits stores to sell alcohol within 500 feet of a public school, but does not…

There is absolutely no reason that there should be a ban on liquor on Sundays. So we can have Beer and Wine on Sunday...but no "hard" liquor. Craziest law ever. This is long overdue for a change. I think we as Prince Georgians and Americans are capable of making decisions whether or not we want to buy liquor one more day a week. It's always this vocal minority who thinks they can dictate what the…   more ›
