Prim, Proper and Full of Affection: Cat of the Week

London's calling. Why not take him home?

Why, hello ladies.   My name is London and I am one fine young chap. Now let me ask you some questions. Are you tired of your husband not being affectionate enough? Does he expect you to do too much around the house after a long day of work? Does your significant other have a tendency to dress like a bum around the house? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it sounds like you need a little London in your life. My mum taught me well. First of all, men should always be presentable. I always wear my tuxedo. No matter what. No, really, I do. The pattern of my luxurious black and white fur is called a tuxedo coat so you will be guaranteed I’ll always be looking fine.  Not getting enough affection? You need a loving cat in your life…

Saving Monty

Sweet Monty was saved by a local teen from life on the streets and is looking for his new family.

Monty is the true definition of a love bug. He’s a sweet, affectionate, and playful pit-mix who just wants to be loved and be part of a family. He’s a handsome boy who’s only a year old and weighs in at about 60 pounds. His body is still playing catch-up with his big, blocky head, and he has a big, warm bully smile that lights up when he sees you.  Monty’s story is one that demonstrates the best and worst in people. He was found running free in an abandoned parking lot near a major highway by Lauren Bradford, a Good Samaritan and local senior at Fairfax High School. Lauren’s parents were away for the weekend and she took it upon herself to take this sweet pup in, canvass the local neighborhoods, and post flyers and ads on Craigslist in …

Looking For a Cowboy? Dog of the Week

Lonestar is looking for a new ranch.

Howdy!   Yee-haa! My name is Lonestar and boy am I just thrilled to meet you! This cowboy is a 10 week old bundle of pure energy. I’m a puppy so that means I love to play, play, play.   The highlight of my day is meeting new people and I have been known to cry when my new best friends put me down. That probably explains why I’m not alone in any of the pictures. How did I get to be such a handsome young chap?  You should see my mommy Dallas – she is a stunning brindle coat boxer. My poor mommy came into the shelter only a few days before giving birth. Everyone was surprised when one adorable little pup popped out.  Needless to say, I instantly became the lone-star of the shelter!   Get it? Ha ha. I hopefully won’t be here long, so hop on …

Black is Back - And on Sale: Cats of the Week

Black cats need love too.

Could you pick just one of us to be featured as Cat of the Week? Didn’t think so!  I’m Mark and these are my friends: Beetle, Hamlet, Octavia, Rosemary, Scarlett, and Torrey.   The list could go on and on.   Did you notice what we all have in common? We are all black! Young, old, big, and small, we have the sizes, ages, and personality types covered. Believe it or not, we are not even half of the black cats here at Small Miracles. There are so many of us that we are all one sale! Yep, you heard me right. That’s the same amount of love for even less.  All the adults have reduced fees. Us kittens are now $100 each and $65 for the second instead of the normal $135. Did you know that because we are all black, we are the least likely to be …

Looking to Keep Busy? Dog of the Week

I want to run, jump, play, fetch and do whatever else will wear you -- and your kids -- out.

Do you often wonder, 'where do my kids get all this energy?' Have you found yourself sending your kids outside frequently to run off all their extra energy? Have you day dreamed about hiring a nanny to take them off your hands for a bit when they are bouncing off the walls?   If you answered yes to any of those questions, then I may be the dog for you!  My name is Kelly and I’m an Australian cattle dog.  Not only does that mean I’m smart, but I have lots of energy. My instincts make me great at herding cattle, so I would also be great at rounding up active kids outside. Unlike Sammy, the strapping young featured dog from last week who is looking for an adult companion, I want a family.  I guess you could say my biological clock is ticking…

What an adorable boy! Please note that ACDs (Kelly looks to be an ACD mix) are wonderful dogs, but usually not the best dog for a first-time owner. They need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, and most would do best in a "dog savvy" home. But they are amazingly smart and eager to please (they are working dogs, and they want a "job" to do), so they really make fantastic pets, as long as the…   more ›

Waiting Patiently: Cat of the Week

Alaska has been featured before, but she's still looking for a home.

I'm Alaska and I am an all-American, girl-next-door type of cat. I am sweet, kind, pretty, and fun-loving. Basically, I am the purrfect girl to bring home to meet the parents. But for some reason, even though I was featured on Patch last Thanksgiving, I'm still at Small Miracles, still looking for a home. It's hard to understand, because really do love people. I stand in the table by the door to my room and greet everyone that comes in. Oh, and I just love to have my chin scratched! Stop by today and bring this all American girl home in time for next Thanksgiving. Or Labor Day, even. I sure would be thankful!   Small Miracles Cat Rescue is a nonprofit, no-kill cat and dog shelter in Ellicott City. Each week we will feature a cat that needs…

Jolly Molly: Cat of the Week

Molly was happy at her last home and wants to be happy with you!

Greetings!   My name is Molly, but you can call me Jolly Molly.   I knew it was a cat’s turn to be featured, so I made sure I would be selected this time. As soon as the volunteer walked into my room, I was by her feet and did not leave her side until she left. Sometimes that meant jumping over the other cats or climbing on different things, but I stayed right with her purring and rubbing on her legs.   I did get a good head scratch out of it!  Like I said, you can call me Jolly Molly because I’m just so sweet and happy. I am a pleasant little lady who loves people and cannot wait to have a new home.   I came from a loving home, but when my owner passed away I had to come here. It’s been nice meeting other cats, but I have been here for …

Two of a Kind: Dog(s) of the Week

Two family-friendly dogs are competing for your attention in an adorable battle of the sexes.

Hello!  I’m Lady and I’m a shepherd/retriever mix.   In my opinion, there are two main rules.Number one: Dogs are way cooler than cats.  Number two: Girls rule and boys drool. Seriously, have you ever met a male dog that didn’t drool? Obviously the human writing these articles didn’t get that memo.  She is making me share the featured spot with a BOY.  How rude! His name is Shep and he is also a shepherd mix.   She said she wanted to feature a bigger dog that would make a great family pet and could not decide between the two of us. Blah Blah Blah. Sense a little bit of resentment? Well, Shep and I do have a history  . ..   No, not that kind!   We were both rescued from a high-kill shelter in North Carolina by Small Miracles.  I’m certainly…

Why Not Be Happy? Cat of the Week

Felicity lives up to her name, despite a rough beginning.

Hello my friend!  My name is Felicity! I love my name because it means happiness and I am one happy girl. I’m patient, quiet, and kind. It’s rare to find be in a bad mood because I am just happy to be here and happy to be healthy again.  The streets are a rough life for anyone and cats are no different.   I don’t quite remember how it happened, but by the time I came to Small Miracles, I had open wounds on my back foot. The wound was so severe that a few of my back toes had to be amputated. I could be sad or bitter about my rough past and losing a few toes, but what’s the point in that?   Being bitter does not get you anywhere; and certainly not a home.  So, I made the decision to always be happy! Even when they took my stitches out, I sat…

A Little Off: Dog of the Week

Sure, I walk sideways, but that's part of my charm.

Good day! My name is Sebastian; after all, a little rat terrier like me needs a big name.  Like our last dog of the week, Omar, I’m another true rescue. While I’m not as old as my pal Omar, I do have a disability so that makes me extra special. When I was a younger lad, I developed quite a back problem and as a result, I had my back fused. I’m no longer in any pain, but I do walk a bit sideways, not quite like our Maryland blue crab though. Even though I walk funny, I still love going on walks! Once on a leash I’ll wiggle and walk all around which does make it just about impossible to get a good picture of me. I would love a quieter home where I would make a great companion and lap dog. A nice quiet home would be a dream come true! Do I …
