The chief executive officer of Howard County’s Economic Development Authority will be sworn into office at 10 a.m. Friday in Annapolis.
Laura Neuman, who was selected to be the new county executive, was greeted with a rush of applause moments after she received a majority vote Thursday from the Anne Arundel County Council. Neuman, 46, of Annapolis, currently serves as the CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority. She gave a rousing speech during her interview with council members on Thursday night, laying her whole life bare—her trials and successes in making her own way in the world. Neuman earned a master's in business administration without a high school diploma or undergraduate degree, worked at T. Rowe Price, and Hilton Hotels before earning a name for herself in Maryland. Counties across the state took measures to deal with the Newtown, CT school shooting.
Communities across Maryland have been reeling in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Some residents said they feared dropping their children off at school while others demanded action from legislators. Hyattsville Elementary School's new principal, Julia Burton, addressed her students Monday before Prince George's County schools observed a minute of silence to honor the victims of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, CT. The local Board of Elections will accept completed applications through Oct. 30. Forms can be filled out online from the Maryland Board of Elections or in person at the county BOE office: All mailed absentee ballots for the Nov. 6 election must be postmarked by Nov. 6, and must be received by 10 a.m. on Nov. 16. The victim was allegedly attacked in parking lot of the Maryland City hotel.
Anne Arundel County Police are investigating the assault and robbery of a man in the parking lot of Red Crown Inn in Maryland City Monday night. According to police, the incident happened shortly after 11 p.m. in the 3400 block of Laurel Fort Meade Road. Center to provide resources for job seekers.
Resources for job seekers and employers are now available in Laurel with the opening of a new workforce center by the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. The Laurel Regional Workforce Center will serve Prince George’s, Howard, Montgomery, and Anne Arundel counties and will help connect job seekers with training and employers, reports The Baltimore Sun. The center will be the first regional office of its kind and will be located at 312 Marshall Ave in the same building at the Laurel College Center.
Police search for man who robbed a Laurel market.
Police in Anne Arundel County are searching for a man who robbed the International Food Market Store earlier this week. According to police, the theft took place Tuesday just before 3 p.m. along the 3500 block of Laurel Fort Meade Road. Upon arrival, officers spoke with employees who indicated that a male entered the store, approached the cash register and displayed a handgun in his waistband. The suspect then demanded money from a store employee who turned over an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police. The man then exited the store and fled in a gray sedan, likely a Ford Escort, accompanied by another individual who was in the passenger side of the vehicle, according to police. Maryland City Elementary is being lauded for its commitment to enhancing the wellness of its students, student families, school staff and even the community. The school has won the Anne Arundel County Public School's Wellness School of Distinction Award, reports ABC Baltimore.
