On Thursday, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for this year’s Emmy Awards, which will air on Sept. 23. The new facility will expand the operations of two local theater companies.

A 200-seat theater that will feature two established local adult and youth drama companies broke ground on Red Branch Road in Columbia on Thursday. Leap Day Tragedy Brought to Life by Savage Artist

On Feb. 29, 1996, Laura Ritenour gave birth and lost a child.

Leap Day in 1996 should have been one of the happiest days of Laura Ritenour's life–she was giving birth to her third child. But Ritenour, from Laurel, and her husband, Leonard, knew chances of life for Joshua were extremely slim–Joshua was 24 weeks old when he was born with a fetal defect condition called VATER syndrome. "He lived for just over an hour," Ritenour told Patch. Joshua's life began and ended in Washington Adventist Hospital on the most rare day on the calendar. The only evidence of his life were a few body measurements and a couple of blurry Polaroid photographs taken by a nurse. Less than three weeks later, seeking comfort in a symbol of a lost child, Ritenour brought those photos to artist Sylvia James George in Savage Mill…

Columbia Teen Musician Wins National Contest

Atholton High School senior Evan Johnson declared winner of online music video contest.

Multi-talented musician Evan Johnson has been named the grand prize winner of the Music & Arts "Find Your Voice" music video contest. Johnson, 17, bested five other finalists in the online voting contest to win $2,000 to put toward Yamaha instruments and a year's worth of music lessons. Perhaps the most exciting part of the prize package is a trip to Los Angeles, where Johnson will meet Greyson Chance, a fellow teen musician who hit it big after being discovered by comedian and talk show host Ellen Degeneres. Music & Arts announced the winner on its Facebook page Monday night.
