Comment: 'What the Heck is Going on?'

For the second time in a month, Patch readers question bail set for a suspected criminal.

  Patch readers have again taken notice of bail set for a suspected criminal that allowed him to pay and walk away from the courthouse. On Nov. 17, Howard County Police were investigating a stolen car when, according to a police report, they spotted a man walking away from a Columbia house in a black jacket, ski mask and gloves. Robert W. Stone, 43, of Columbia, was arrested and charged with burglary, as well as car theft and resisting arrest. He appeared before Court Commissioner Lori Schulhoff, who set his bail at $150,000, and he was released on $15,000 bond. Suspected Door Kick-in Burglars Released on $15,000 Bail

Police said the duo stole more than $22,000 in firearms, jewelry and electronics.

  The day after two suspected burglars were arrested and accused of of stealing more than $22,000 in firearms, jewelry and electronics from at least four Howard County residences, they were released on $15,000 bail, court officials said this week.  Howard County prosecutors said they tried to increase the bond, but without success. “I don’t believe $15,000 would be the first number that came to mind,” said Natasha M. Byus, the Howard County assistant state’s attorney handling the case. “I did not have an opportunity to speak with the commissioner before the bond was set.” Both Joseph Leo Baumgarten, 40, and Dianna Lynn Marketti, 30, posted the full bail on Oct. 5 after being charged with 25 counts each, including first-, second- and fourth…
