Hampton, with three local players, wins MEAC and will play Duke in the NCAA tournament while Arledge and George Mason will meet Villanova.
The game was held in North Carolina—Winston-Salem to be exact—but there were certainly a lot of ties to Laurel on Saturday when Hampton faced Morgan State of Baltimore in the MEAC men's basketball title game. The Hampton roster includes junior Chris Tolson and Milade Lola-Charles, a pair of Laurel High graduates. And for good measure, Wesley Dunning, who also plays for the Pirates, grew up in Laurel and graduated from Gonzaga High in Washington, D.C. The Morgan State team includes Larry Bastfield, whose high school coach at Towson Catholic was Josh Pratt, now the girls basketball coach at St. Vincent Pallotti High in downtown Laurel. Laurel High grad Tolson has great game for Hampton in a win over Howard and former coach, while St. Vincent Pallotti High grad appears in the NCAA Division III national tourney.
Talk about taking it out on your former coach. Junior guard Chris Tolson, a Laurel High graduate, surely impressed his former prep coach when he scored 20 points for Hampton in a win at Howard on March 3 in college basketball. One of the Howard assistant coaches is Keith Coutreyer, who coached Tolson at Laurel High and then helped recruit him to Hampton. Coutreyer is in his first season as an assistant at Howard after two years at Hampton. Tolson and Hampton teammates Milade Lola-Charles (Laurel High) and Wesley Dunning, who grew up in Laurel and played in high school at Gonzaga, will take part in the MEAC tournament. Former Laurel head coach Coutreyer is an assistant coach at Howard while two of his former Spartans play for rival Hampton.
This has been a challenging season for the men's basketball team at Howard University. Howard has been stung by injuries to several of its top players. But help appears to be on its way. "We had MASH unit there for awhile," said Laurel resident Keith Coutreyer, the associate head coach under Kevin Nickelberry with the Bison. Four prep standouts plan to attend Howard next season, including players from Largo (Brandon Bailey), Gwynn Park (Brandon Ford) and Gonzaga (Oliver Ellison). Laurel High basketball teams prepare for the playoffs in Class 4A while St. Vincent Pallotti boys fall on Wednesday to Glenelg Country in post-season play.
This has been a season of adjustments for the Laurel High boys basketball team. The most obvious was the arrival of Torrence Oxendine as the head coach, as he took over for former Laurel guard Antoine Gaither. The Spartans also welcomed Carlos Horne, a transfer from Largo High. Another new face is guard Adrian Rousseau, who played as a freshman last year for KIMA, a charter school in Washington, D.C., that played some of its home games at the Laurel Boys and Girls Club. One of his best games this year for Laurel came in a win against Bowie as he made several open jump shots.
