Maryland City Walmart Workers to Join Black Friday Strike

Employees of the retail giant hope to take advantage of one of the year's busiest shopping days.

Several employees of the Laurel/Maryland City Walmart Supercenter are joining a national strike effort this Black Friday to protest what they view as low wages, poor scheduling practices, and worker intimidation on the part of the retail giant. The campaign, organized by Making Change at Walmart and linked with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, is planning demonstrations outside dozens of stores nationwide on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. In the D.C. area, Nov. 23 protests are scheduled for Walmart and Sam's Club locations in Laurel, Hyattsville, Bowie, Gaithersburg, Woodlawn, Severn, Clinton, Abingdon, Alexandria, and Fairfax. (Both chains are owned by parent company Walmart Stores, Inc.) The …

I agree! How many are currently out of work that would be happy to have a job at all? Some people just don't know when to give up. FYI do they even have a clue what those at UFCW Local 400 make in salary? What a waste of their union dues. Only lines the pockets of the union leaders.   more ›

SPEAK OUT: Do You Plan to Spend More Money this Holiday Season?

How will your finances affect your holiday spending?

Two-thirds of respondents to a recent poll by the NPD Group said they “plan to spend about the same” as last year, while 10 percent planned to “spend more.” With the economy and job situation still in flux for many families, we want to know what families in Montgomery County and Prince George’s County plan to do for Christmas, Hanukah, or Kwanzaa gifts in 2012. Will you be more creative with your gifting? Use sites like Groupon, Living Social, etc? Brave Black Friday sales? Cook or bake for familty and friends?

A Shop 'Til You Drop 2012 Holiday Season

Early Thanksgiving means more shopping time.

While you may just be putting the Halloween decorations away, retailers are already getting out the Christmas trees, Hanukkah menorahs and Kwanzaa candleholders, prepping for the longest holiday shopping season possible. For decades, now, Black Friday has heralded the start to the month-long holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving, celebrated the fourth Thursday in November since 1941 when Congress passed a law, falls on Nov. 22 this year, which means that there are a whopping 32 days of shopping, assuming you are not the type who buys gifts of lottery tickets and beef jerky from the convenience store on the way to your Christmas celebration. In that case, you have 32 days during which to procrastinate. According to the National Retail …

A "shop til you drop" holiday season. Yep, brings the REAL meaning of the holidays to you, doesen't it? A big shame how most of our major holidays have disintegrated into a time when people feel they MUST over-spend, they MUSt buy what's "in" at that particular moment, their decorations MUST be better than their neighbors'.....   more ›

Holiday Traditions New and Old, Real and Fake

Take a look at some of the most popular winter holidays, and some of the newer traditions they have spawned.

Christmas With a name literally meaning "Christ's Mass," the biggest Christian holiday has become the biggest commercial event in the world. In what may be a surprise to many, a Christmas-like holiday was actually celebrated by the Norse in Scandinavia hundreds of years prior to Jesus' birth. People feasted over burning Yule logs in observance of the winter solstice, according to the History Channel. Now, kids roll into bed the night of Christmas Eve in anticipation of the magical Santa Claus, whose legend of generosity traces back to third-century Turkey. Hanukkah Jewish scripture suggests the origins of Hanukkah, also known as the "festival of lights," date back to around 200 B.C., when a group of Jews in Israel worked to cleanse and …

Hanukkah: It Isn't 'Christmas' for Jews

Hanukkah is not, for Jews, what Christmas is for Christians. Here’s what rabbis have to say about the holiday season.

While Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, changes dates each year according to the Hebrew calendar, it usually falls in close proximity to Christmas. That means the two are often lumped together under the ubiquitous "Happy Holidays" banner. This year, in fact, Hanukkah's fifth night is Christmas Eve. Rabbi/Cantor Rhoda Silverman of Temple Emanuel in Reisterstown said Hanukkah, which is not one of the holiest Jewish days, should be seen as separate from the Christian commemoration. “We don’t have to merge them and melt them down together into one American festival in order to respect each other,” she said. “We can respect each other’s holidays and keep their integrity.” Because of Hanukkah's proximity to Christmas, it has fallen victim…

Popular NORAD Santa Tracker Site Goes Live

The NORAD Santa Tracker offers games and videos each day leading up to Christmas.

Anxious for Christmas or know some young ones who are? A special website launche Thursday just for the holiday season, bringing games and videos leading up to Christmas Eve. On Dec. 24, the NORAD Santa Tracker starts tracking Santa's journey, a special treat for believers young and old.  The tradition started in 1955 after an advertisement for Sears Roebuck & Co. misprinted a telephone number for a special "Santa hotline." Instead of reaching Kris Kringle, the number put kids through to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Commander-in-Chief’s operations, according to a description on the NORAD Tracks Santa Facebook page, which has more than 715,600 "likes." Colonel Harry Shoup, Director of Operations at the time, received the first…
