The owner of a Catonsville landscaping company who was cutting down a tree in Clarksville fell to his death along with part of the tree Tuesday, according to Howard County Police. Police found Michael Joseph Dingle, 40, unconscious and not breathing when they responded to the 8500 block of Reservoir Road just after 10 a.m. According to police, Dingle, owner of Natural Way Design and Landscaping, was working in a tree with all of the rigging attached. Police say Dingle and his employee removed the top 15 – 20 feet of the tree; it went as planned. After removing the top of the tree, however, the trunk uprooted, according to police. Someone is stealing checks from outgoing mail and cashing them, said police.
Howard County Police are advising residents to take precautions when placing checks in mailboxes after a string of mail thefts were reported in the county. Police have received seven reports of checks being stolen from their outgoing mail in Laurel and Clarksville. "In each case, a suspect looks for mailboxes with red flags up, indicating there is outgoing mail in the box to be picked up," stated police. "The suspect then steals checks from the outgoing mail, alters the payee's information and then goes to a branch of the victim's bank to cash the checks." A recent fatal accident has brought the stretch of road between I-70 and 108 in Clarksville under examination.
After an Ellicott City man was killed in a fatal accident on Route 32 in Clarksville on Nov. 13 the safety of the high speed, two lane road has been called into question. Currently the stretch of road where the fatal accident occurred is a two-lane road that experiences traffic during rush hour. On Nov. 13, the fatal accident was caused by the driver of a flatbed truck losing control of the vehicle while driving southbound, skidding into the northbound lane and striking a Jeep driven by an Ellicott City man who later died at the hospital, according to police. A string of kick-in burglaries around Howard County have led police to ask residents to be vigilant.
A string of daytime burglaries in Howard County in which doors have been kicked in has prompted the following police warnings: Use your dead bolt, hide your valuables in unexpected places and report any suspicious activity. The burglaries began on Monday, with seven daytime burglaries at residences in Ellicott City, Columbia and Clarksville, according to police, then continued with one in Elkridge on Tuesday, and two more on Wednesday in Ellicott City and Woodbine. The suspect is believed to first knock on the door of the home to determine if anyone is home, and then kick the door in to gain entry, according to police. Former Russian figure skater alleged to have fondled, sent inappropriate text messages to underage girl, CBS13 reports.
A former Olympian who worked at a Laurel skating rink is sitting in a Howard County jail after being arrested for allegations of having an inappropriate relationship with a former student, according to Baltimore's CBS affiliate WJZ. Genrikh Sretenski, 50, a former Olympic skater from Russia now living in Clarksville was picked up on a warrant in Howard County this week after court documents alleged that he fondled an underage girl he was instructing and sent her as many as 500 text messages, WJZ reports. Sretenski is awaiting extradition to New York where the charges of inappropriate conduct are filed. He was an instructor at the Mid-Atlantic Ice Dance College in West Laurel. Three adults and two children were displaced in one of the fires, officials reported.
Two fires caused significant damage to two homes in Columbia and Clarksville late Tuesday evening and early Wednesday morning, fire officials said. No serious injuries were reported in either fire, but one of the fires displaced five individuals, according to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services. The first fire started just after 10:39 p.m. at a two-story single family home near the 7000 block of Guilford Road in Clarksville. Officials reported seeing fire showing from the second floor of the residence. About 30 firefighters extinguished the blaze in approximately 20 minutes, according to fire officials.
