Alleged College Park Shooter Underwent Background Check for One Gun Purchase

Dayvon M. Green did not have to undergo a background check for a second gun under Maryland gun laws that Gov. Martin O'Malley would like changed.

Green, the University of Maryland graduate student identified as the shooter in last week's apparent murder-suicide in College Park, had to undergo a state background check to purchase the 9mm handgun used to kill his roommate. But Green, who was schizophrenic, according to reports, did not have to undergo a state background check to purchase the semi-automatic Uzi .22 caliber rifle police found fully loaded next to his body. Report: Victim Had Raised Concerns About Alleged Shooter Dayvon Green

Stephen Rane, the 22-year-old University of Maryland student who was killed Tuesday when roommate Dayvon Maurice Green reportedly opened fire on his roommates, had previously expressed concerns about Green having a gun, The Baltimore Sun reports. The Sun quotes Drew Needham, a senior and former roommate of Rane, as saying that Rane felt "uncomfortable in the house" given Green's mental illness and ownership of a firearm. But Rane had not anticipated any violent behavior, Needham told the paper. The Sun also notes a surprising discovery by University of Maryland police: that Green had worked as a student aide for the department for a brief period last year. Victim in College Park Shooting Attended Howard County School

Stephen Rane went to Centennial High School. He was killed Tuesday in College Park.

The victim in Tuesday's fatal University of Maryland, College Park shooting attended high school in Ellicott City, according to school officials. Stephen Rane, 22, of Silver Spring, attended Centennial High School, according to Rebecca Amani-Dove, Howard County Public Schools spokesperson. She could not, however, verify when or whether he graduated.  The Baltimore Sun has reported Rane graduated in 2009. He was an undergraduate student at University of Maryland, where he studied English, according to an article he wrote for the school's newspaper. Reports: College Park Shooter Suffered From Schizophrenia

Dayvon Maurice Green reportedly admitted himself to a mental health facility in 2009.

Dayvon Maurice Green, the 23-year-old University of Maryland student who allegedly shot two roommates Tuesday before killing himself, may have suffered from schizophrenia, according to The Washington Post and The Gazette. On Tuesday afternoon, police announced that Green had been afflicted with a mental illness for at least the past year. He had reportedly been prescribed medication to treat his disorder. The exact nature of Green's illness was not publicly disclosed, but the Post and Gazette cite sources close to the investigation as saying he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Two UMD Students Dead, One Injured in College Park Shooting

Graduate student Dayvon Maurice Green took his life after firing on his roommates, killing one.

Editor's note: Early Tuesday morning, two University of Maryland students were left dead and another injured in a shooting on 36th Ave. in College Park. Police say that the gunman, identified as 23-year-old graduate student Dayvon Maurice Green, set several fires around his house before shooting two of his roommates when they came outside. One—Stephen Alex Rane, 22, of Silver Spring—was later pronounced dead, while another suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Green then turned the gun on himself, according to police. College Park Shooter Dayvon Maurice Green: What We Know

Sources described a likable engineering student with a strong academic record—and a mental illness.

On Tuesday afternoon, Prince George's County police identified the alleged shooter from an early morning murder-suicide in College Park as 23-year-old Dayvon Maurice Green. According to police, Green was an engineering graduate student at the University of Maryland. Speaking to reporters outside the scene of the shooting, UMD President Wallace Loh said he believed Green had been at the university for about a year. Green earned his undergraduate degree from Morgan State University in Baltimore, officials said. The Baltimore Sun reports that he was a member of Phi Beta Sigma's Gamma chapter and maintained a grade point average above 3.5.
