Head-On Collision in Highland Sends Two to Shock Trauma

Both drivers are currently listed in "stable" condition, according to Howard County Police.

Howard County Police are investigating a collision that occurred around 3 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of the Clarksville Pike and Briaridge Court in Highland, that sent two people to Shock Trauma. The driver of a 2011 Chevrolet Aveo crossed the double yellow lines and collided head-on with a 1999 GMC Yukon carrying one occupant, according to a press release from the Howard County Police Department. Preliminary investigation shows the Chevrolet driver's "failure to drive right of center" was the primary cause of the collision, according to police. Howard County Police Get 50 AED Devices for Patrols

Patients will no longer need to wait for defibrillators when Howard County Police are first responders.

Cardiac arrest occurs often in vehicle collisions, and now the Howard County Police, frequently the first responders, are equipped with the same defibrillator devices found in ambulances. HCPD announced in a statement this week the installation of 50 Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) devices into county police vehicles. This is in addition to the more than 150 active ambulances and fire engines that carry the devices, according to police spokesperson Elizabeth Schroen. “Most people don’t know that police are also trained as first responders,” Police Chief William McMahon said in the press release. “Our officers can act quickly during these critical first few minutes and increase the likelihood of survival.” Fire Chief William Goddard…

Two Injured After Pursuit Through Laurel

Laurel Police followed a driver from Laurel across the Howard County line into North Laurel.

Police from the City of Laurel pursued an intoxicated driver across the Prince George's County line into Howard County shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday, leading to a collision involving three additional vehicles, according to a department spokesperson. An officer had initially pulled over a vehicle on the 300 block of Second Street in Laurel at 10:14 p.m. and then the driver, Franky Skinner, of Miami Gardens, FL, fled north on Route 1, said Police spokesperson Carreen Koubek. The driver of the vehicle struck one parked vehicle and two moving vehicles on the 9900 block of Washington Boulvard, resulting in a small fire in one of the vehicles, which was extinguised, according to Koubek.
