Crash on I-95 North in Laurel Causes Major Traffic Jam

The accident occurred Monday morning just south of MD-198.

Update, 12:15 p.m.: Traffic is moving normally again after the accident scene was cleared. Update, 11:25 a.m.: Some traffic is now getting by in the righthand lanes. Original article: A late morning accident on I-95 North in Laurel has left all lanes closed at this hour, causing a backup of several miles. Early reports indicate that two vehicles overturned in the crash, which occurred just south of MD-198/Sandy Spring Road. Emergency personnel are on the scene, and all northbound lanes are currently closed. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes. Sorry, this has not been shown on any maps that DPW has issued in the past. However, journalistic accuracy would require saying that something is in "Laurel" would mean that it is in the City of Laurel. No part of Laurel is in Howard, Anne Arundel, or Montgomery County, nor outside the boundaries of the current City and its recent annexations.   more ›

Alcohol May Have Been Factor in Head-on Collision in Savage

Two drivers transported to shock trauma after weekend collision on Route 32 in Savage.

Two drivers were seriously injured in a head-on collision Saturday night in the eastbound lane of Route 32. A 2004 Toyota Scion was heading the wrong way on Route 32 west of Route 1 in Savage when it collided with a 1999 Toyota Camry. Both drivers were transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The driver of the Scion, Jose I. Romero, 34, of Baltimore, was listed in serious but stable condition at shock trauma. The 27-year-old driver of the Camry, Regan A. Murphy, of New York City, is also in serious but stable condition, said police. Neither car had passengers, according to police. Fire Engine Collides With Car in South Laurel, Sending Woman to Hospital

The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries, a fire department spokesman said.

A woman was sent to the hospital Sunday afternoon after a fire engine collided with her vehicle in South Laurel, authorities said. The crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. as responders were headed to a possible apartment fire in the 13800 block of Briarwood Drive. According to Prince George's County Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady, an engine from the Calverton Fire/EMS Station collided with the victim's car at the intersection of Contee Road and Claxton Drive. The woman—the lone occupant of the other vehicle—suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment, Brady said. Three firefighters aboard the emergency vehicle were shaken but uninjured. UPDATE: Driver Dead in Route 32 Crash

Route 32 reopened around 2 p.m. after being closed since 8 a.m. to investigate a fatal crash.

  Update - 2:10 p.m. Route 32 has reopend after an approximately 6 hour investigation into a fatal crash near 108 in Clarksville, according to police. UPDATE - 11:25 a.m. The driver of the Jeep involved in Tuesday morning's crash on Route 32 has died, reported police. Michael Paul Dumonceau, 68, of Ellicott City was pronounced dead at Howard County General Hospital after being transported in critical condition, according to police. Police said Route 32 will remain closed in both directions as police investigate the crash and it is not expected to reopen for a number of hours. Officials Urge Care after Recent Fatal Crashes

During Safety and Health Week, the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services will focus on the roads.

  The Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS) is reminding drivers to keep safe when on the roads, a timely reminder as there have been at least four fatal vehicle collisions in the county in less than a month. HCDFRS is working with the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the National Volunteer Fire Council to help make safety come first–for residents of the community as well as in the department–during International Fire/EMS Safety and Health Week, June 17-23. “My first priority is to keep every man and woman in this department safe, but I need the community’s help in order to do that,” Fire/EMS Chief William Goddard said in a statement. “We’ve taken tremendous strides as a department, earning the …

Crash in Jessup Sends One to Shock Trauma

A van and tractor-trailer collided on MD 175 Monday morning.

A collision between a van and a tractor-trailer sent the driver of the van to Shock Trauma with “critical injuries,” according to Howard County Police. The collision occurred on Route 175 near Dorsey Run Road in Jessup just after 8 a.m. Police are investigating the cause and nature of the incident, said police spokesperson Elizabeth Schroen. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and police did not release the identity of the person sent to Shock Trauma.

Crash on Snowden River Parkway Sends Five People to the Hospital

Three sent to shock trauma, listed in "critical but stable condition."

According to a statement from the Howard County Police Department, just before 11 a.m. Tuesday morning, a 2003 Mazda Protege5 attempted to turn right onto Snowden River Parkway from the direction of April Brook Circle, but was struck by a 1998 Dodge Durango heading north on Snowden River Parkway. Three people from the Mazda were critically injured and sent to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, including the driver, Claudi Garcia, 37;  passenger Marlin Yanira Santos, 28, of Silver Spring; and Claude Gutierrez, 31. As of 4 p.m., all three of the critical patients were listed in “stable” condition.
