Report: Maryland Poised to Lose 115,000 Jobs

Industry-sponsored analysis finds that as a result of the debt-ceiling deal, Defense Department and other jobs are at risk.

Maryland could lose as many as 115,000 jobs next year when automatic federal budget cuts go into effect, according to a study commissioned by the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA).  Many of those losses could come from one of Howard County's largest employers -- the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab. “The Economic Impact of the Budget Control Act of 2011” predicts that the automatic cuts, known as the “sequestration” mandate, could lead to more than 2 million job losses nationwide.  In a bleak introduction on Second to None, an AIA-funded website, the report’s author predicted that the national unemployment rate would rise to 9 percent. Virginia Rocket Launch to Be Visible Across Mid-Atlantic

The satellite-bearing rocket is said to be visible from southern New York to North Carolina.

Get your binoculars out. A U.S. Air Force rocket carrying a Department of Defense satellite is scheduled for launch Tuesday, June 28, from the NASA Wallops Island launch site in Virginia. According to a NASA representative, the rocket should be visible from Howard County, provided the weather is not heavily overcast. The rocket’s visibility has a long range, as it might also be seen from southern New York, North Carolina, West Virginia and western Pennsylvania.   According to the NASA website, the satellite “is an important step to demonstrate the capability to meet emerging and persistent war-fighter needs.” The rocket is scheduled to launch between 8:28-11:28 p.m. Backup launch days are June 29-July 10.
