Rape Survivor Shares Story, Hope Ahead of North Laurel Vigil

Kristina Gilchrist is a featured guest at Wednesday's commemoration for victims of domestic violence.

When Kristina Gilchrist was violently raped by the boy she called her “play brother” at the age of 13, she didn’t tell anyone.  “I was already sexually active. I was acting out,” the DC native said Tuesday. “I was really lawless.” After 15 minutes of being pushed and choked by this boy who had a gun—and who told her both that he loved her and that he was going to kill her—Gilchrist gave up. “I just stopped resisting, stopped fighting,” she said. “I was just there.” Gilchrist had been sexually assaulted by a cousin when she was 7 years old; she told her parents, was taken to the hospital, and released. Dating Violence Awareness Forum at HCC Friday

Domestic Violence Center, Howard Community College partner to provide free seminar during Teen dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.

The Domestic Violence Center of Howard County and Howard Community College are partnering to hold "It’s Time to Talk: A Forum on Dating Violence" from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Fridy at the college. February is recognized nationally as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, according to a statement from DVC. During this free community forum participants will learn about this serious public health problem, how to spot the warning signs of dating violence and what resources are available to Howard County residents. Domestic Violence Center Names New Director

Jennifer Politt Hill will assume her new duties Feb. 21.

The Domestic Violence Center of Howard County has announced the appointment of Jennifer Politt Hill as the organization's new executive director. Politt Hill will begin her leadership of the center Feb. 21, according to a press release from the Board of Directors. "We are delighted to welcome Ms. Politt Hill to the DVC and have great confidence in her deep commitment to and experience in the fields of domestic violence and sexual assault," Board of Directors Chairwoman Lara Weathersbee said in the statement. The appointment comes in the aftermath of a tumultuous year for the organization that saw its entire Board of Directors resign, its executive director removed from office and county and state funding temporarily suspended.
