Police: State Troopers Injured by Drunk Driver on I-95 in Laurel

A Laurel woman was charged in the incident with driving under the influence.

Maryland State Police say two troopers were injured early Friday morning after their patrol car was struck by a drunk driver in the Laurel section of I-95. Trooper First Class Manuel Moreno, 42, and Trooper John Cabrera, 34, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. They are both being treated at Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly. According to the MSP, Moreno and Cabrera were investigating a crash shortly after midnight on I-95 north near Sandy Spring Road. As the two were filling out paperwork in their marked patrol car, a 2001 Pontiac Sunbird passed by a perimeter of flares set up by the troopers and struck their vehicle from behind, police said. The troopers were transported to the hospital by EMS personnel. …

I have a family member who has double-digit DUI/DWI charges in Maryland and Virginia. His scumbag attorney tells him how to manipulate the courts, fake medical symptoms to avoid court hearings, get people to commit perjory on his behalf, and get his friends to blow into the court mandated alcohol breathalizer unit in his car so it can start and he can drive it!!!! And yet, he has a valid license…   more ›

Five Charged at Route 1 DUI Checkpoint

Police checked licenses, sobriety in North Laurel.

Police arrested five people over the weekend during a sobriety checkpoint in North Laurel, according to a statement from the Howard County Police Department (HCPD).  Between Friday night and Saturday morning, police said 690 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, which was on Route 1 northbound at Davis Avenue and staffed by Maryland State Police and HCPD. Three drivers, including one 18-year-old, were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, said police. The teen was given an additional charge related to being underage, according to Sherry Llewellyn, spokeswoman for HCPD.  Two people were arrested for driving on suspended licenses, said police. All drivers were provided with literature on the dangers of drinking and driving, …

Howard County Police to Hold DUI Checkpoint This Weekend

Officers will check for alcohol, seatbelt compliance and use of child safety seats.

The Howard County Police will set up a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in the county this weekend, police said in a statement Wednesday. Police will be in marked and unmarked vehicles in a setting with lights and signage. While the department did not say where the checkpoint would be, it did say what officers will be looking for: The checkpoint is partially funded by a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office and falls under the Checkpoint Strikeforce, a multi-state initiative to take impaired drivers off the roads. This is the second DUI checkpoint of the summer, after police arrested four people for driving under the influence on the Fourth of July. In Howard County, alcohol was involved in 25 percent of fatal crashes last year, …

Four DUI Arrests on the Fourth, None Arrested at Lakefront Celebration

Howard County had a mostly peaceful 4th of July.

Howard County Police reported they made four DUI arrests on Wednesday, the 4th of July, and that no one was arrested at the Columbia Lakefront celebration. It was a noticeable turn from last year's festivities when 18 people were arrested for DUI over the 4th of July weekend and a juvenile was arrested after a fight broke out at the lakefront. About 20,000 to 25,000 people attended this year's celebration at the Lakefront, according to Phil Bryan, superintendent of recreation activities for the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks. That number is less than the 30,000 to 50,000 that were expected to attend. Bryan wrote in an email that the low turnout may have been the result of the heat and threatening inclement weather. …

State Police on the Lookout for Drunk, Aggressive Drivers this Holiday Weekend

The Maryland State police said they will be out in force through the July 4th holiday.

Although July fourth is not until next Wednesday, Maryland state troopers will begin a statewide increased traffic enforcement initiative this weekend in an effort to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries during the upcoming holiday period. Beginning this weekend, each of the 22 Maryland State Police barrack commanders will be deploying drunk driving patrols that will continue throughout the July fourth holiday. A news release said the additional troopers will specifically work to get drunk drivers off the road before they injure or kill other people. Special patrols will also be targeting speeding and aggressive drivers. State Police commanders have reviewed crash data for their area and are deploying these additional patrols in the …

Howard County Police to Hold DUI Checkpoint Before July 4th Holiday

Officers will check for alcohol, seatbelt compliance and use of child safety seats.

The Fourth of July falls on a Wednesday this year, but the Howard County Police Department is ready for early celebrations. In addition to ramping up patrols on July 4, police will set up a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in the county during the weekend, police said in a statement Thursday. POLL: Drinking or Texting, Which Is Bigger Issue For Teens Driving on Prom Night?

Demonstrations this week focused on drinking and driving on prom night.

High schools across the region, including in Howard County, are conducting demonstrations this week to educate teens about the danger of drinking and driving. What do you think is the bigger issue among teens: drinking and driving or texting and driving? Tell us in comments or in the poll. Alcohol awareness has been a focus this prom season. On Monday, students from Liberty High School in Eldersburg went to the Sykesville Driver Training Facility and, donning glasses designed to simulate drunkenness, got behind the wheel. “That was crazy,” one teen said. “I don’t think I’ll ever drink and drive.” The event was organized by The Maryland Community Crime Prevention Institute, the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services …

Sobriety Checkpoint in Howard County This Week

Police will be checking for intoxicated drivers, seat belt usage and child safety seats.

The Howard County Police are giving drivers warning: buckle up and drive sober—they’ll be watching. This week, the police department will be conducting one of its regular sobriety checkpoints at an undisclosed location. Drivers will have to stop at the checkpoint, which will be marked with signs and lights and staffed by officers in uniform. At the checkpoint, police will check drivers to ensure they are sober, wearing safety belts and using child safety seats properly. Police in Howard County determined that alcohol was a factor in six of 13 fatal collisions last year. In 2010, police arrested nearly 1,650 people for driving while intoxicated or driving under the influence. According to a statement released by police, “an average of five …

County, State Police Combat Unsafe Driving

The first operation will be from 8:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. today along Route 704.

Drivers, it’s time to buckle up, sober up and straighten up your behind-the-wheel habits in Prince George’s County. The PGPD and the Maryland State Police will comb certain parts of the county this month and next month, rooting out aggressive and impaired drivers during a project called Operation SOLO. The first operation will be from 8:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. today along Route 704. Don’t forget—if you’ve been drinking, call a friend or a cab to pick you up. Make it your habit to put on your seatbelt as soon as you get into your car. And if you’re prone to road rage, grab one of those squishy balls with a happy face on it and squeeze away rather than blast another driver on the road.
