At the Howard County Republican headquarters in Ellicott City on Monday, volunteers moved quickly around a nicely appointed office, bringing in yard signs, discussing issues. Director expects an 84 percent turnout for 2012 election in Howard County.
The director of the Howard County Board of Elections advised residents to head to the polls in the afternoon on Tuesday to avoid long lines during an election in which big turnouts are expected. Guy C. Mickley, director of the board of elections, expects an 84 percent turnout among the county's 188,000 registered voters. That compares to the 60.88 percent turnout Howard County saw in the 2010 gubernatorial general election, according to state election data. State turnout for that election was 54.02 percent. He added that about 16 pecent of the county voted during early voting this year and another 3 or 4 percent will vote absentee. Alice Giles has a tendency to talk fast. Whether the subject is new town zoning, the upcoming elections or advocating for stormwater management, she can talk extensively on many topics. Providing information is what Giles, 26, does as co-president of the League of Women Voters of Howard County. Before elections, the non-partisan group creates an election guide and holds forums for prospective candidates. David Gertler announced he will be hosting science, engineering, technology and math (STEM) discussions with parents and homework help for students in science and math during scheduled sessions at county library locations over the next two months.
