The throwback drive-in burger joint is moving in on Route 40.
Yes, it’s true. Sonic is coming to Elliott City. The fast food chain, known for keeping the drive-in, car hop and mixed fountain drink alive, will be moving in to 10164 Baltimore National Pike, at the site formerly occupied by 84 Lumber. When is it coming? “Well, given that this is now my fourth development project, I’m very reluctant to put a date out there,” said franchisee David Crocetti, who lives in Ellicott City. “It would be great if we could be open by the end of summer,” he said. Crocetti owns Sonics in Randallstown, Baltimore city and Edgewater, so he knows these things take time. Once the restaurant does open, it will feature throw-back style fast food, the restaurant’s signature car ports, and something a little different. “…

Randy & Steve's The New General Store is continuing in the tradition of the Yates Market.
When Yates Market was open, the store was known for its deli – particularly its fresh sausage. Randy Neely and Steve Archuleta said they plan to bring a deli back to Main Street at Randy & Steve’s The New General Store, which opened in the space formerly occupied by Yates Market. The deli can open after getting the seal of approval from the Howard County Health Department; its inspection is scheduled for Thursday. On April 27, the store is hosting its grand opening. There will be free massages, wine tastings courtesy of Pure Wine Café, cooking demonstrations, and local music, including guitarist João Bastos who will be traveling from Portugal, where Archuleta and Neely lived before returning to the Ellicott City to set up shop. (Bastos …

The 28-year-old was mad that dad accused him of using his credit card, court officials said.
An Ellicott City man pleaded guilty in Howard County Circuit Court Tuesday to attempted first-degree murder after he stabbed his father last September, according to court officials. Clement Yien-Chiu, 28, had been living on the 5100 block of Lackwanna St. in College Park. According to court records, Yien-Chiu’s had come over for dinner on Sept. 8. His father accused him of theft; he said his son had used his credit cards without permission. Yien-Chiu pulled out a pocketknife, according to records, stabbed his father in the neck then punched him in the head. He then grabbed a “large kitchen knife,” according to the charging documents, and chased his dad, who was able to get into his vehicle and drive away. Howard County Assistant State’s …

Scenes from the morning "snow storm."
Despite school and government closings, most roads in Columbia and Ellicott City remained snow-free as of around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Maybe an inch of snow was accumulating in grassy areas in the county, but for the most part, the blades of grass could still be seen peeking through the slight accumulation. Flip through the pictures above and upload your own snow, or lack of snow, photos to the gallery by clicking the "Upload Photos" box below the pictures.

Check out this 18th Century manor.
They don’t build 'em like they used to. The 6-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom house and nearby 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom in-law house at 9900 Timberknoll Lane was built in 1765; nearly 250 years later, it's on the market. Listed by Remax Central Atlantic, the stone, Georgian style “Historic Manor,” also has eight fireplaces, a necessity in the days before forced air heating. Of course, the house has been updated to include heat, central air conditioning and a host of other amenities including a whirlpool, security system and stainless steel appliances. It retains some of its 18th Century charm, however, with wood-burning fireplaces, built-in shelving and hardwood floors throughout. The 7,100 square-foot, $1.25 million house sits on a 3.32 acre lot in …

One man wins big in a contest to promote the use of a new parking application in the Historic District.
When a stranger calls and asks a kid for her parent’s cell phone number, the responsible child politely declines. Even if it’s the County Executive asking. The young woman who identified herself as Mark Kinzie’s daughter to Ken Ulman did just that Thursday after Ulman called to let Kinzie know he had won Howard County Tourism’s “Download for Date Nights” promotion. To support her responsibility, perhaps Kinzie will take his daughter out to dinner at one of the half-dozen restaurants that donated $400 worth of gift certificates to the promotion, or take her to a show at Merriweather Post Pavilion. In all, the Ellicott City resident won more than $4,000 worth of free goods, services and gift certificates donated by local businesses as …
