Volunteers are encouraged to help the Parks and Recreation Department beautify the park.
Laurel will be hosting a community cleanup on Saturday, April 20 at Granville Gude Park to celebrate Earth Day. The Parks and Recreation Department encourages volunteers to participate in beautifying the park. In the past, roughly 20 to 40 participants have come out to lend a hand in the event. The department also invites students at neighboring schools to join the activities, according to Mike Lhotsky, director of Parks and Recreation. Individuals who would like to participate in the cleanup are advised to dress appropriately for the outdoor activity. Trash bags and gloves will be provided, along with a limited number of Earth Day T-shirts for volunteers. Volunteers are asked to meet at 8300 Mulberry Street at 9 a.m. Granville Gude Park …

The circus will be in Howard County later this month. Will you be going?
It's a memory that many of us share - watching elephants march down the main road signaling the arrival of the circus. But is it time for that practice to stop? Piccadilly Circus is coming to the area on April 9. Dismayed with the way in which animals are used as entertainment, Patch commenter Cj Ellie wrote that it was time to "throw animal-act circuses into the trash heap of degrading form of entertainment," likening them to freak shows. Kathie alderman wrote: "They are being shocked and whipped on a regular basis! And what big cats want to sit in cages next to loud blaring speakers??!!" These two aren't alone.
