Fort Meade Readies for Looming Sequester

The Department of Defense could see spending cuts of more than 9 percent, leading to possible furloughs for civilian workers.

With the threat of deep budget cuts lingering, officials at Fort Meade are preparing for the need to carry out missions with fewer resources   Congress has yet to reach an agreement to stop the automatic cuts known as the sequester, which would force $85 billion in across-the-board cuts to government spending in 2013, including more than $40 billion to the Department of Defense. The cuts would begin to take place on March 1, barring a new agreement from Congress and President Obama.  "Every program gets a cut, so their base operating budget will get a cut, and they'll have to figure out how to do less with less," said Katherine Hammack, the assistant secretary of the Army in charge of installations. "I won't say more with less, because it'…

Hundreds Demonstrate Against Westboro Baptist Church Near Fort Meade

A large crowd staged a counter-protest against five members of the Kansas-based church who gathered to demonstrate their anti-gay views near Meade High School.

Several hundred people rallied at the intersection of Disney Road and Route 175 Thursday morning to counter the presence of five Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) demonstrators near Meade High and Meade Middle schools. The counter-demonstration featuring local students and community members gathered well before sunrise to rally against the message of the Kansas-based church, which is known for its anti-gay views. Church members were not permitted to protest on the grounds of the schools or Fort Meade, but were relegated to the northeast corner of Disney Road and Annapolis Road in Severn. Counter-protesters lined up on the west side of Disney Road. Westboro Baptist Church is known for its highly charged protests of the funerals of military …

Federal Government, Maryland’s Largest Employer, Holds Workers, Residents in Limbo

Something’s got to be done.” A shuttered federal government would hit Maryland particularly hard because it is home to more than 130,000 non-military federal employees—the largest contingent of workers in the state. Nationally, the shutdown, which could occur Saturday if no agreement between U.S. lawmakers is made on the 2011 budget, could mean furloughs for about 800,000 federal employees. “I’m nervous about it,” said …

BRAC Officials Push for Federal Funding

A top BRAC official said nearly $5 billion in transportation money is needed to comfortably accommodate all of the growth coming to the Fort Meade area.

A top official working on the region’s response to BRAC told business leaders Tuesday that nearly $5 billion in transportation upgrades would be needed to accommodate the growth near Fort Meade, but said even a much smaller injection of federal money would be helpful.  About 1,000 new workers have arrived at Fort Meade since the beginning of the year due to base realignment and closure (BRAC) activities, and officials are aggressively pushing for additional funding for road upgrades, while calling on workers to find alternatives to driving to Fort Meade in their cars. Jean Friedberg, the regional transportation coordinator for the Fort Meade Regional Growth Management Committee, said a comprehensive transportation demand management plan …
