Kentucky Derby Winner Orb Has Maryland Ties

Orb won the first leg of the Triple Crown Saturday, making up major ground in the home stretch to win the Kentucky Derby.

Orb, a thoroughbred with Maryland ties, won the Kentucky Derby Saturday, setting up a potential homecoming story later this month at the Preakness. Ridden by Joel Rosario, Orb began well back in the 20-horse field, before closing very strong in the home stretch.  "I was really far back," Rosario told NBC. "I said hopefully he can go faster than that. I was saying maybe I was too far back, but it was so easy." See video of the race on NBCSports.com. The horse is owned by northern Baltimore County resident Stuart S. Janney, an executive with a New York-based financial firm, according to The Sun. Laurel Park Draft Plan Includes Major Redevelopment, Possible Hotel

The Maryland Jockey Club is looking to win state matching funds for the changes.

The Maryland Jockey Club is reviving plans for a major redevelopment of Laurel Park, The Baltimore Sun reports. In a draft capital improvement plan submitted to state officials last week, the MJC outlined some of the steps it hopes to take with the property over the next several years. The club is required to notify the Maryland Racing Commission and the state Office of Budget and Management of its plans in order to qualify for matching funds supported by the state's slot machine revenue. According to the Sun, the MJC's blueprint includes razing the current Laurel Park clubhouse and building a new one on the other side of the track, moving the stabling area, building 300 new stalls, and transforming the current barn area into a space for …

Ten-Year Deal Reached to Keep Racing at Laurel Park

The agreement, which also covers Pimlico Race Course, provides for a season of 146 racing days in 2013.

Horse racing industry groups have reached an agreement with Laurel Park to keep racing at the track for another 10 years, Gov. Martin O'Malley announced Friday. The deal—which also covers Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore—includes the Maryland Jockey Club, the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, and the Maryland Horse Breeders Association. It follows a temporary agreement reached between the same parties in 2010. “I applaud the incredible work of  all the parties in reaching a deal that retains racing industry jobs and preserves the future of racing in Maryland for years to come," O'Malley said in a statement.
