A Laurel man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday on charges of producing child pornography, prosecutors said. Frank Alan Klukosky, 43, received the sentence from Chief U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow in Greenbelt. Klukosky also faces lifetime supervised release and must register as a sex offender. According to Klukosky's plea agreement, in June 2012, a federal probation officer found pornographic images and videos depicting children on the cell phone of a registered sex offender who had been in contact with Klukosky. Three people were charged with driving under the influence, police said.
Authorities say five drivers were arrested late Saturday and early Sunday at a sobriety checkpoint on U.S. Route 1 in North Laurel. According to Howard County police, three people were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, one for driving without a license, and one for driving on a suspended license. A total of 537 vehicles reportedly passed through the checkpoint, situated near Davis Avenue and staffed by members of the HCPD and Maryland State Police. Drivers were given an informational handout with DUI information, police said, and the Howard County chapter of Mothers against Drunk Driving provided assistance with the checkpoint. What was all the fuss about? Update, 1:25 p.m. Howard County police have identified the body found Sunday afternoon in North Laurel as that of 49-year-old Staci Marie Watkins. Foul play is not suspected, police said. An autopsy is pending. Original article: The body of a woman was found Sunday in the woods off of the 9000 block of U.S. Route 1 in North Laurel, authorities said. According to Howard County police, a man called 911 around 4 p.m. to report that he had seen the body while walking in the woods. Officials believe it may be that of a woman in her 40s reported missing several weeks ago by a friend. There were no obvious signs of foul play, police said, but an investigation is ongoing.

A North Laurel man arrested in May after police allegedly discovered half a million dollars worth of marijuana plants growing in his basement has pleaded guilty to manufacturing controlled substances, ExploreHoward.com reports. Manoj Unni, 30, of the 9300 block of Cross Timbers Court entered his plea in October, according to the site. He faces sentencing in January. On May 9, Howard County police acting on an anonymous tip searched Unni's home. Officials said they found a “substantial marijuana grow operation in the basement, including sophisticated growing equipment." Police say the shooting occurred early Sunday at the Taco Bell on Minstrel Way.
Police are investigating a shooting that left a Taco Bell manager in critical condition after he was shot several times outside his business, according to a Howard County police press release. Police said they responded to the 7100 block of Minstrel Way at 12:50 a.m. on Sunday for a person who had been shot. An investigation revealed that the Taco Bell manager was confronted by two unknown male subjects outside of the store who then began shooting at him, police said. According to the release, the manager was struck several times, but was able to make it back into the Taco Bell. Howard County has been awarded more than $52,000 in federal grant money earmarked for violent crime reduction and other public safety activities. The U.S. Department of Justice grant is part of $6.3 million provided to the state and individual counties and cities in Maryland. Howard County's $52,520 share will be used for extra crime patrols and traffic enforcement, as well as for interpreter training and training in operating an emergency vehicle. The money will also pay for a contingent traffic analyst, according to a statement released by Maryland Sens. Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin. Laurel: Police say suspects broke a front window on a home on the 9900 block of Wintry Day Place on Saturday between noon and 8 p.m. The suspects reached through the window and unlocked the door, but nothing was reported missing. Yolanda Murchison jumped a curb by Route 1 in North Laurel and struck a marked Howard County police cruiser, according to police.
A Columbia woman is in jail and a police officer is in the hospital after a Saturday morning crash on Route 1 in North Laurel, according to the Howard County Police Department (HCPD). At approximately 1:24 a.m. on July 28, Yolanda Murchison was driving her Chevrolet Cruze northbound on Route 1 at Davis Avenue when she "jumped the curb and drove across the median and struck the right rear of the police vehicle," according to a statement from HCPD.
