Toilet Activist Files to Run for Maryland Lt. Governor

Duane Davis, known for leaving toilets as political protest outside the Historic Courthouse in Towson, is running as a Republican in 2014.

A Milford Mill man known for political protests involving putting toilets in front of a county government building in Towson has filed as a candidate for Lt. Governor in 2014. Duane "Shorty" Davis has filed as the running mate with Brian Vaeth, a Perry Hall man. Davis was charged in February 2011 with planting a fake destructive device in the form of a toilet outside the Historic Courthouse in Towson and making false statements about a fake destructive device. He was acquitted of those charges seven months later. Davis, a caterer, said in a February 2013 article that the incident in 2011 was a protest of alleged corruption in Gov. Martin O'Malley's administration. He claims that he had made political statements using toilets previously, …

Ulman Supports Medical Marijuana, Doesn't Take Position on Decriminalization

Medical marijuana and decriminalization of small amounts of the drug are issues currently being debated in the Maryland legislature.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman said in a statement he supports medical marijuana, but through a spokesperson said he has not taken a position on marijuana decriminalization legislation. Ulman is rumored to be a contender for the governor's office in 2014, although he has not formally declared his candidacy. Due to term limits, he is prohibited from running for a third term as Howard County Executive.  He has previously weighed in on state and national issues like economic development, gun control and gay marriage. Currently, the Maryland legislature is debating two different bills involving marijuana use in the state. One, which passed the state Senate in March, would decriminalize up to 10 grams of marijuana and make possession of this…

Laura Neuman Named Anne Arundel County Executive

Neuman is the current chief executive officer of the Howard County Economic Development Authority.

In a 4-3 vote late Thursday, the Anne Arundel County Council chose Howard County official Laura Neuman to be the next Anne Arundel County Executive. Neuman replaces John Leopold, who was convicted of misconduct in office. Leopold resigned from the post this month after a judge found him guilty on two counts. Neuman was seen as a surprise choice, besting several more high-profile candidates. Currently the CEO of Howard County’s Economic Development Authority, Neuman is known for her personal story of overcoming adversity. She has been outspoken about her past as a rape victim as a young woman. She went on to become a successful entrepreneur. “At a very early age I decided I was going to live a very independent and a different life,” Neuman …

Maryland County Execs Fear Sequester Effects

Howard, Prince George's and Montgomery County officials say federal spending cuts would wreak havoc on local economy.

Ranking officials in Howard, Prince George's and Montgomery County are urging Congress to come to a compromise which could avert steep cuts in federal spending–known as the sequester–set to go into effect on March 1.  Howard County Executive Ken Ulman told the Baltimore Sun that sequestration could have an economic impact in his county. Businesses in Columbia have already said they plan layoffs if sequestration happens, he told the Sun. According to data released by Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker's office, the effects of sequestration could wreak economic havoc on Prince George's County. “Sequestration would feel like a cold to most of the nation, but to Prince George's County and the rest of the Washington metropolitan …

Report: Ulman Locked out of Superdome

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman was reportedly locked out of the Super Bowl during the power outage at the Superdome.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman went down to New Orleans to watch the Baltimore Ravens play in the Super Bowl along with his brother Doug Ulman and his father Lou. Ulman's brother Doug, the CEO of Livestrong, had acquired the tickets, according to Sam O'Neil, an Ulman administration official. But when the lights went out just after the start of the third quarter, it was Ulman who was out in the dark—he was locked out of the building, according to an Explore Howard report. Ulman told Explore Howard he had gone outside to call his wife, when the power went out, and the stadium went into lockdown. "I turned around, the building was dark and they locked the doors," Ulman told the paper. "It was bizarre." Once power was restored, Ulman was …

Ulman Says County is a Model for Maryland

Howard County Executive said progress in the county is a model for the state in his State of the County address.

County Executive Ken Ulman proclaimed that Howard County’s investments in education, sustainability and public health have made it a model for the rest of the state in his State of the County address on Thursday. Addressing a room filled with businesspeople at Turf Valley in Ellicott City, Ulman joked about social media and shouted-out to the Ravens. But he also focused on the county’s lowest unemployment rate in the state and its Triple-A bond rating. “It is important to note that none of these accomplishments have been achieved by accident,” said Ulman. “They all happen by design. They are the result of the decisions we have made together.”  “Through our choices and our decisions, we have created a model for Maryland,” said Ulman.  In …

Ulman to Deliver State of the County Address Thursday

Last year Ulman focused on seizing the moment.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman is scheduled to deliver his State of the County address to the local business community at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City on Thursday. This will be Ulman's 7th time delivering the address that looks ahead at the priorities in the county. This year's address will focus on Howard County's emergence from the economic downturn in a position for growth and how the county has become a "model for Maryland," according to David Nitkin, director of communications for Howard County. In his 2012 address, Ulman discussed making Howard County a model for  21st century economic innovation. He spoke about founding the Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship and working on the Inter-County Broadband Network, according …

If Ulman thinks that the intercounty broadband network is a model for innovation, he must be smoking something. I seriously doubt even one citizen has noticed a single diffence from that federal program that cost more than $100 million tax dollars. But, nice try?   more ›

Ulman Offers Breakfast for Best Ravens Pun

County Executive will pick from the caw-cophony of puns submitted and deliver breakfast to the winner.

Howard County Executive and Ravens superfan Ken Ulman is getting into the Super Bowl spirit by soliciting Ravens-themed breakfast items from local residents. Whoever submits the best idea, will get a breakfast delivered by the County Exec to their office, school, or organization. Ulman put the call out on Tuesday on his Facebook page by offering menu items such as T-sizzle sausage and eggs, Brendan Ayanba-bages, Michael Eggs Oher Easy and Box o'morning Joe Flacco. Soon after, the ideas flowed in. Here are the top ones now: Personally, I'd like some Ozzie "Wizard of Oz Wheaties." If you'd like to be considered for the contest, post your idea on Ulman's Facebook page under the post, "Ulman's Ultimate Ravens Breakfast." What would you bring…

SPEAK OUT: Does Armstrong's Admission Affect Livestrong?

County Executive Ken Ulman and his brother, Livestrong CEO Doug Ulman, weigh in on the cyclist's interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman watched his brother Doug Ulman, president and CEO of the Livestrong Foundation, talk about the future a day after founder Lance Armstrong admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs, according to the county spokesman. “He watched his brother on the Today Show today,” county spokesperson Mark Miller said. “He knows that both his brother and supporters are disappointed, but that the important work of the foundation must continue.” Armstrong on Thursday told Oprah Winfrey that he had used performance-enhancing drugs for all of his seven Tour de France wins and said he would “spend the rest of my life trying to earn back trust and apologize.” Doug Ulman said on the Today Show Friday morning that watching …

Ulman Talks Speed Cameras, Guns on Midday

Three Maryland county executives joined Dan Rodricks to discuss national, state and local issues.

After some technical difficulty, at 14:35, Ken Ulman joins Harford County Executive David Craig and Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz on WYPR's Midday with Dan Rodricks to talk about statewide issues.  Ulman said officials need to present a gas tax plan that citizens can buy into – one that lays out a vision for where money will be spent despite the “back room dealing,” going on in Annapolis. On speed cameras, Ulman said if legislators want to “strengthen the rules, we’re more than willing to participate,” but he wants to make sure that the speed camera program in Howard County remains trustworthy. The program aired on Tuesday Jan. 8, the day the school safety task force has its first meeting, in response to the Newtown, Mass. …
