Maryland Ranks No. 6 in Nation for LEED Certifications in 2012

USGBC's rankings are based on the number of square feet of LEED-certified space per resident.

  Maryland ranks No. 6 in the nation for new LEED certifications, according to a report released by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The LEED designation stands for "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" and provides a measureable and verifiable review of a building's design, construction, operation and maintenance from an environmental impact point of view. USGBC's rankings are based on the number of square feet of LEED-certified space per resident. Maryland clocks in at No. 6 with a 127 projects totalling 10,954,324 square feet of LEED-certified space, equating to 1.90 square feet per person. Guilford Development Earns Housing Commission ‘Pioneer’ Award

New development is replacing Guilford Gardens on Oakland Mills Road.

The doors of Monarch Mills on Oakland Mills Road haven’t even opened yet, but the "mixed income" housing development has already earned Howard County’s Housing Commission an award for pioneering environmentally friendly development. County Executive Ken Ulman announced Monday that the commission won the 2010 Pioneer in Housing Award for small agencies from Nan McKay & Associates, a California-based consulting company that works with U.S. Housing and Urban Development projects across the country. “The Housing Commission is truly setting a remarkable example for the future of the industry by prioritizing green features and healthy living,” said Ulman in a press release.
