The State's Attorney for Prince George's County has found "no apparent criminal wrongdoing" from an August case in which a Laurel Police officer struck a handcuffed man, according to a statement from the City of Laurel. The incident occurred on Aug. 5 around 2 a.m. as police responded to a report of a fight at Laurel Station Bar and Grill (14933 Baltimore Ave.). In a cellphone video captured by an eyewitness, one officer—later identified in court documents as Pfc. J. Diaz-Chavarria—appears to hit a man outside the bar after he is already restrained. Document cites excessive force, battery, and negligence in police slapping incident.
A man who said he was assaulted earlier this month by a Laurel Police officer has filed a lawsuit in Prince George's County Circuit Court against the City of Laurel. The seven page suit contends that D'Ante Williams, 27, was subject to excessive force, battery, assault, negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress at the hands of the Laurel Police Department after being handcuffed Aug. 5 at the Laurel Station Bar and Grill. Debate over video of Laurel Police officer striking handcuffed man rages on.
Just days after a video showed a Laurel Police officer allegedly striking a handcuffed man at the Laurel Station Bar, readers continue to sound off on whether the officer went too far. The incident, which was recorded early Sunday morning, captured an officer repeatedly striking the face and head of a man who was involved in a bar fight. A spokesperson for the Laurel Police Department told Laurel Patch the incident is being reviewed by the Prince George’s State’s Attorney’s Office, in addition to an internal investigation. A bystander captured video during incident, according to a report.
The Laurel Police Department is investigating an incident involving an officer striking a handcuffed man at a bar early Sunday, according to a report. News4 is reporting that a witness captured a video of a Laurel police officer repeatedly striking a handcuffed man over the face and head during an apparent arrest at Laurel Station Bar and Grill over the weekend. According to the report, police were called at 2 a.m. to the bar along the 14900 block of Baltimore Avenue after a fight broke out between patrons. In the video, two officers are seen taking a man away in handcuffs while one of the officers began yelling and striking the man. “He punched him one time. He punched him again.
