It's hard to do in a hurried situation, but a mobile phone photo snapped by the witnesses would have probably produced an image of better quality. It looks like the creep is wearing a some type of logo imprinted with the Maryland flag. Maybe this bit of info. could help jog someone else's memory or help identify him. What a ruse, pretending to be a good and patriotic citizen of the State. Let's …   more ›

L.L. Bean Store to Close in May

Store manager says they will not be renewing lease at the Mall in Columbia.

The L.L. Bean store at the Mall in Columbia will close on May 31, according to a store manager who spoke with Patch on Wednesday evening.  The manager said employees had been notified and that L.L. Bean wouldn’t be signing a new lease at a smaller location at the mall. The manager declined to give her name when asked. "L.L.Bean has been a valued tenant at The Mall in Columbia," said Katie Essing, the mall's general manager in a statement. "We never like to see a retailer leave our property; but when that situation arrives, it provides us with another opportunity to continue to provide great retail options to our shoppers." L.L. Bean had previously asked to downsize their location, which caused General Growth Properties, the mall’s …

SPEAK OUT: What’s Better: Main Street or Shopping Malls?

A national expert says malls are out, downtowns are in. Do you agree?

It’s a tension being played out across the Baltimore-D.C. region: Are customers spending their money more at shopping malls or in downtown retail districts? There are some indications that downtown retail districts may be on their way to winning the battle for shoppers. Richard Florida, a national expert on cities and development, wrote recently on an Atlantic Cities blog post that, “After years of neglect, decline, and abandonment, downtowns across the United States are poised to come back—and not just as redoubts for hipsters, artisanal food, indie music, and trendy boutiques, but as major shopping destinations.”  Florida pointed to examples of downtown entertainment districts, such as the D.C. corridor that includes Gallery Place Mall …

WATCH: No Hunger Game, But a Hunger Statement

Have you seen these masterpieces of modern food?

Spring Break ended this week for students in Howard County, but not before a handful of students from several Columbia high schools volunteered their time, energy and smarts toward helping end hunger in their neighborhoods. Seven students from Long Reach, Wilde Lake, Oakland Mills and River Hill high schools worked for several hours Monday stacking canned foods for a display at the Mall in Columbia in hopes to raise hunger awareness and funds for the Howard County Food Bank. "We have all our lives to go on these little vacations, but it's our senior year and you want to end with something really positive," said Swathi Narayan, 18, who will soon graduate from Oakland Mills. The student group, called Food for Tomorrow, is a student-led …
