The numbers in Howard County are even higher than statewide results.

The state moved up from 27.9 percent in 2011 to 29.6 percent in 2012, the highest percentage in the nation, according to a report released by the College Board Wednesday. A total of 48.2 percent of Maryland students took the exam in 2012, up from 46.4 the previous year. In comparison, 28 percent of all Howard County high school students, including over half of the seniors enrolled in an AP class in 2012, with 82 percent also taking the corresponding exam. Maryland Schools Top Nation 5th Consecutive Year

The state received a B+ grade by Education Week, which released the annual report.

Maryland schools were ranked the best in the nation for the fifth year in a row, according to a study released by Education Week. "Maryland public schools are so fortunate to have bipartisan support throughout the State," State Superintendent Lillian Lowery said in a statement. "Our schools have the benefit of strong support from the Governor, other elected officials, educators, parents, business leaders, and the public at large. This ranking could not be achieved without the support of every partner, and we won’t be able to continue our improvement without that broad coalition." The state received an 87.5, B+ grade in the publication's analysis. Massachusetts trailed by 3.4 points to secure a second place ranking. At the other end of the …

Howard County MSA Scores Similar to 2011

The county says a "technical error" caused two schools to fail in meeting goals for special education students, and the state will recalculate.

The Maryland State Department of Education released scores for school districts in the 2012 Maryland State Assessment (MSA) and the Howard County Public School System mostly saw slight increases, but not without a hitch. Two schools in the HCPSS system–Clarksville Middle School in Clarksville and Mount View Middle School in Marriottsville–failed to meet requirements in their special education groups, according to a HCPSS press release. But, according to county school officials, there was an error in calculating the proficiency scores and they will be recalculated by the state. What are your thoughts on standardized testing? Is it an effective way to gauge the effectiveness of teachers? Share your thoughts in the comments. "The inaccurate …

The initiative serves communities where 50 percent of kids and teens qualify for free or reduced meals.

Beginning June 25, several locations in Prince George’s County will be available for children ages 18 and under to receive free meals through the Summer Food Service Program.  During the summer, the program reimburses agencies for meals and snacks served in communities where 50 percent or more of the children qualify for free or reduced meals during the school year, according to Joan Shorter, the Prince George’s County Public Schools' food service director. The meals served may vary depending on the location, but there is a required meal program each sponsor must follow, said Jodi Yard, program specialist for the Maryland State Department of Education. For a lunch or a dinner, the menu is required to have 1 cup of milk, three-fourths of a …

@AFC: We have had some great presidents. claiming Obama is one of the greatest is quite premature. I would submit however that thus far he is FAR from the worst. Of course, George H. W. Bush was an effective and pragmatic President who also did what was best instead of just following the party line.   more ›
