New Restaurant Offers Indian and Nepalese Food in West Columbia

The restaurant opened March 15.

While east Columbia boasts popular Indian restaurants like Royal Taj and House of India, getting a curry fix can be difficult on the west side. That changed last month when Curry and Kabob opened in Wilde Lake Village Center on March 15. Located next to The Melting Pot and Bagel Bin, the restaurant offers both Indian and Nepalese cuisine. "We've been doing well," said owner Chandra Chhantyal on Wednesday, about the restaurant's first 15 days in business. Business is likely to pick up soon. On Wednesday local food blog HowChow published a review saying, "it's a talented kitchen in a personable restaurant." The restaurant offers Indian signatures like chicken tikka masala ($14.95), lamb curry ($15.95), and garlic naan ($3.50); but also …

Construction Set to Begin to Renovate Former Rouse Building for Whole Foods

Howard Hughes employees moved out of the building last week, according to a spokesperson.

On Thursday afternoon, there were people at the former Rouse Company headquarters on the Columbia lakefront wheeling out furniture and trash cans. Last week, a Howard Hughes spokesperson said the development company had completely moved their offices out of the building and into the top floor of the Teachers Building, which is where Clyde's is located. With the employees out, the Frank Gehry designed building will begin its transformation from office space into the new home of a Whole Foods grocery store and Columbia Association gym. The construction process will remove the third floor of the four-story building to make way for the grocery store, according to site development plans submitted to the Howard County Department of Planning …

Attorney for Wilde Lake Teen Responds to Rape Allegations

Attorney says evidence will show teen's innocence.

The attorney representing DeShawn Jones, the 17-year-old accused of raping a 14-year-old girl inside Wilde Lake High School in Columbia earlier this month, said on Monday there is evidence that may prove his client's innocence. "Mr. Jones denies the allegations brought against him," said attorney Adam Frank in a statement released Monday. "He and his family would ask that you please refrain from any judgment until all of the facts are brought out during trial. The public must remember that there are two sides to every story and there will be evidence that will shed light on Mr. Jones's innocence." Jones, of Columbia, was arrested on Feb. 5 after a parent of the female student called police and reported the alleged rape. Jones is charged as…

Fort Meade Readies for Looming Sequester

The Department of Defense could see spending cuts of more than 9 percent, leading to possible furloughs for civilian workers.

With the threat of deep budget cuts lingering, officials at Fort Meade are preparing for the need to carry out missions with fewer resources   Congress has yet to reach an agreement to stop the automatic cuts known as the sequester, which would force $85 billion in across-the-board cuts to government spending in 2013, including more than $40 billion to the Department of Defense. The cuts would begin to take place on March 1, barring a new agreement from Congress and President Obama.  "Every program gets a cut, so their base operating budget will get a cut, and they'll have to figure out how to do less with less," said Katherine Hammack, the assistant secretary of the Army in charge of installations. "I won't say more with less, because it'…

Report: Frederick Sheriff Says Injuries Show Man Shot by Deputies Pointed Gun

The Frederick County sheriff's office said injuries to a teen shot and killed by deputies indicated he was aiming a shotgun at them.

The Frederick County sheriff's office told the Frederick News-Post last week that injuries to the hands of a 19-year-old man shot and killed by sheriff's deputies earlier this month show the man was pointing a shotgun at the time he was killed. The News-Post reported that police said the shotgun's pump action and stock were damaged and the weapon was loaded, with a round in the chamber, when 19-year-old Daniel Vail was killed inside his Mt. Airy home. At the time of the shooting, sheriff's deputies were serving a Howard County Police search warrant related to a Mt. Style and Inspiration at Ellicott City's GoGo Guru

The new historic Main Street boutique sells yoga apparel and more.

Hillary Brich says yoga has changed her life. So much so, “I quit my job.” She took up the practice for many reasons - health problems, physical ailments, "Midlife stuff" - but her devotion persisted and grew. She left the world of IT and in November, Brich opened GoGo Guru at 8289 Main Street. The store manages to pull off "funky" and "serene" at the same time, offering a unique assortment of yoga apparel, as well as jewelry and gift items from Durance, a line of essential oils and other aromatheraoy products.  She also has her own line of yoga apparel. “With yoga clothes,” Brich said, "You either shop at designer stores or you shop at Target. There’s really nothing in between.” At the designer stores, you pay an arm and a leg and at the …
