Wintry Mix Thursday Night Could Create Icy Conditions in Howard County

The National Weather Service has issued the following statement.

  The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook Thursday for Howard County and much of central and western Maryland warning residents to expect a wintry mix with possible freezing rain Thursday night into Friday morning. NWS is predicting less than a half an inch of sleet and snow accumulation possible overnight as well as a morning fog. Freezing rain is expected to stop by 4 a.m., although rain is likely to continue up until 4 p.m. Friday, according to NWS. However, the winter weather in this area pales in comparison to what is being predicted for the Northeast. Currently, the National Weather Service is predicting about one to two feet of snow to fall between Friday and Saturday for much of Southern New England, …

Prepare for an Earthquake: Shake It Out on Oct. 18

Schools, businesses and families across Maryland and the country will participate in the U.S. Geological Survey's earthquake drill Thursday.

Although most Americans spent Tuesday night watching Obama and Romney or the Yankees and the Tigers spar, some New England viewers were shaken out of their seats when a 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit Waterboro, Maine. It was a natural event the East Coast became all too familiar with more than a year ago when an earthquake hit the DC region. The U.S. Geological Survey wants residents to be prepared in case another earthquake strikes. It is hosting its first "ShakeOut" drill in this area, including six states in the southeast and Washington, DC, on Thursday, Oct. 18. The ShakeOut drills have been held since 2008 and Thursday's drill will also include seven other states as well as Guam, Puerto Rico, British Columbia and Italy. This year's …
