Pallotti Grad Pittman Will Play Football at Towson

Seniors from last year's team also headed to Salisbury and Widener, while Laurel High track may be without Chapman for the state meet this weekend.

St. Vincent Pallotti High, a private school in downtown Laurel, hosted graduation ceremonies on Wednesday at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. That means several seniors from last year's football team can now begin to prepare in full for the fall, when they hope to be freshmen on college teams. Derek Pittman, a standout offensive lineman, will be a preferred walk-on at Towson University, a Division I-AA program in the powerful Colonial Athletic Association. Towson was the site earlier this week for informal workouts held by several members of the Baltimore Ravens. Pittman also had the chance to be a preferred walk-on for the Terps but went with Towson. "I kind of got lost in the fray with the coaching change" at Maryland, Pittman …

Laurel High Softball Team Prepares to Face Roosevelt

Carmen throws a no-hitter for Laurel High baseball--the fourth in two years for the Spartans.

The Laurel High softball team has benefitted this season from a quartet of seniors who have several years of experience with the Spartans. Becca Jayne, a center fielder and pitcher, has been one of the top hitters for Laurel the past few years. Sarah Allsop, a shortstop and catcher, has been another strong offensive threat for the Spartans and like Jayne has also played four years for Laurel. Senior left fielder Casey Li Causi, another strong hitter, and senior Jasmyn Walker, who plays first, third and outfield, give third-year coach Julie Provino four experienced players. Li Causi has played on varsity for three years while Walker, a transfer from Parkdale, is in her second season at Laurel. Laurel is coming off losses on Wednesday to …

St. Vincent Pallotti Lacrosse Team Eyes League Title

After moving down from the B level to the C division, girls squad aims for a crown in the IAAM behind the play of Pavlacka, Harvey.

When Paul Billingsley took over the girls lacrosse program last year at St. Vincent Pallotti High, he knew he would have to make some changes. And after last season, in which seniors scored more than 100 goals, one change may have seemed out of step with building the program. Billingsley, a long-time club coach in Anne Arundel County, suggested to Pallotti athletic director Steve Walker that his team move from the B division of the IAAM down one level to the C league. That is what the Panthers have done this spring, with success. Pallotti, 5-10 overall last year, won 10 of its first 14 games this season and was 6-1 in league play through Wednesday. The Panthers will have to play at the C level again next year. "I knew we were losing a lot …

Former Nationals' Minor Leaguer Now Aids Prepsters

St. Vincent Pallotti High JV baseball coach played for top farm club of Washington after a college career at Pfeiffer in North Carolina.

Matt DeFrank, a junior shortstop, charged a slow roller in a recent game for St. Vincent Pallotti High. But he did not make the play cleanly for the Panthers, who are off to a strong start for head coach Pat Courtemanche. When DeFrank got to the dugout he went right to varsity assistant David Sheridan, 28, also a first-year JV head coach for the Panthers. "What did I do wrong?" DeFrank asked Sheridan, who played middle infield for the Washington Nationals' farm club at Triple A Columbus in 2007 before a labrum injury ended his short pro career. Sheridan told DeFrank, one of several standout Pallotti juniors, he raised his head too soon before fielding the ball. Later in the game DeFrank fielded a slow groundball that was almost identical …
