Armed Robbery at Sonseta Suites: Howard County Crime Reports

Columbia Armed Robbery – Sonesta Suites A man entered the Sonseta Suites in the 8800 block of Columbia Parkway and pointed a gun at an employee while demanding money around 5 a.m. on April 4. The employee complied, and then the man demanded a safe be opened. At that point, a second employee walked in, unaware of the robbery in progress. The armed man took property from one of the employees and then fled the scene. Residential Burglary Someone broke into a residence in the 10300 block of Swiftstream Place through an open rear slider and stole two videogames and three pieces of luggage in the evening on April 4. Mall Construction Site Burglary, Purse Thief Returns Purse: Crime Roundup

Columbia Commercial Burglary Video surveillance at the Mall in Columbia of March 23 showed two people arrive at about 12:50 a.m. and enter an unlocked door. They cut the lock to an inside door and entered a room under construction. About $3,500 in copper wire was reported stolen.  Robbery Police say the victim was visiting a friend on the 4900 block of Columbia Road on March 21 at about 12:50 p.m. when two more people arrived. All four were sitting on the couch talking when on of the two visitors grabbed the victim’s purse and ran outside with the other visitor, according to police. The two were getting in a vehicle when the victim tried to get her purse back. One of the two visitors kicked her backward, police said, and both left in the …

Son Alerts Dad to Burglar: Crime Roundup

Columbia Residential burglary Someone forced open the front door to a home on the 5600 block of Stevens Forest Road at about 9 a.m. on March 16 according to police. The burglar ransacked the home and reportedly stole televisions, computers, digital cameras, electronic gaming equipment, jewelry, a baseball card collection and cash. Clarksville Residential burglary The son of a homeowner on the 6000 block of Trotter Road woke his dad at 8 a.m. on March 16 to tell him that someone was in the house, according to police. The homeowner chased the burglar, police said, but didn’t catch him. Police say the burglar got inside through an unlocked door. Wilde Lake Middle School Break-In: Crime Roundup

  Columbia Indecent exposure Police say that on Nov. 26 at about 6:15 p.m., a man in a white van exposed himself to a woman in the parking lot of Target on the 6011 block of Dobbin Road. The woman told police that when she got into her vehicle to leave, the man got out of his van and flashed her. When she left the lot, she said, he got back in his van.  The suspect is described as: White man, large build with dark brown hair. He was wearing baggy pants and a sweat shirt and got out of an older model white van with thick rubber around its windows. Balcony-Climbing Burglar: Crime Roundup

The following information was supplied by the Howard County Police Department.

  Columbia School burglary Someone entered the construction area of Atholton High School between Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 according to police. The burglars got in through a temporary fence and stole copper wiring and piping from an addition to the school, damaging the building, according to police. Electric tools were also reported stolen from unlocked toolboxes. Residential burglary Police say that someone pried off a kitchen window screen to a home on the 6100 block of Good Hunter’s Ride sometime between Nov. 14 and Nov. 16. The burglar entered through the window, which was unlocked and stole jewelry, cash, a laptop and a pillowcase, according to police. Police Nab Columbia Catburglar, Two Break-ins at Auto Facilities: Police Roundup

Columbia Police arrest suspected catburglar Police responded to a residence near the 9400 block of Clocktower Lane after a resident reported a breaking and entering in progress. The resident reported that she could hear her dog growling and noise coming from downstairs around 3 a.m. on Nov. 7. Police found that the suspect entered through an unlocked front door and later exited through a side sliding door. As police patrolled the area, one officer spotted a man running and ordered the man to stop, but he ran into the woods. Nearby where the man was spotted, officers found several items stolen from the residence underneath a parked car and in a bush. Armed Robbery in Mall Parking Lot, Chat Line Date Gone Wrong: Crime Roundup

This information was supplied by the Howard County Police Department.

    Columbia: A victim told police that he was robbed at gunpoint at The Mall in Columbia on Nov. 2, just before 9 p.m..  According to the victim, three men approached him in the parking lot of the AMC Theater and struck up a conversation, then demanded money. According to the victim, one of the suspects showed a handgun. The victim told police that he gave one of the men his wallet, and then they got in a black Volkswagen and drove away. The victim got in his car, called 911, and followed them to Green Mountain Circle, according to police. Officers stopped the suspects and arrested three Columbia men, ages 18, 18 and 19. Antiques, Chainsaw, Videogames, Cars Stolen: Crime Roundup

This information was provided by the Howard County Police Department.

  Columbia: Nothing was reported missing at a house on the 6100 block of Wooded Run Drive, but when residents returned home from a trip, they said they found a back window had been shattered sometime between Oct. 12 and Oct. 15. According to Howard County police, there were pry marks on rear sliding glass doors and on both sides of the window. Several rooms were ransacked, according to police, but nothing has been reported stolen. Police responded to a house on the 10200 block of Hickory Ridge Road just before 5 p.m. on Oct. 18. When they arrived, a resident said she saw a suspect leaving her son’s bedroom. Police found a subject who matched the description given by the victim. New Traffic Law Takes Effect This Week

City of Laurel urges drivers to be aware of new law.

Officials in the City of Laurel want residents to be aware of a new traffic law, going into effect today, that requires drivers to be more cautious of pedestrians and other vehicles when approaching a malfunctioning traffic light. Drivers throughout Maryland are now required to make a full stop at a marked stop line when approaching an intersection with a non-functioning traffic light. Drivers also are required to stop before entering a crosswalk, yield to any vehicle or pedestrian inside of the intersection, and remain stopped until safe to enter the intersection. Violations of the new law carry a fine of $90 and two points if the offense does not contribute to an accident.  If the violation contributes to a crash, the fine is $130 and …
