20 to 25 million gallons of wastewater entered Little Patuxent during the power outage that began Monday night.
County Executive Ken Ulman said 20 to 25 million gallons of wastewater entered the Little Patuxent River in Savage after the county's wastewater plant's two electricity feeders lost power Monday night during Hurricane Sandy. The Little Patuxent Water Reclamation Plant lost power at 11 p.m. on Monday and wastewater continued to enter the river until 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Ulman. Once power was restored, the plant was no longer releasing wastewater into the river, according to county officials at the plant on Tuesday. “This is a very serious issue,” said Ulman, standing on top of one of the wastewater tanks next to the river. “We need to work with BGE to get more reliable power here.” He pointed across the river to a woodsy …

Money from a rate increase will not be used for new work, but BGE will continue to update infrastructure, spokesman said.
A rate adjustment requested by BGE will mostly cover work that the utility company has already performed, according to a spokesman. “In Maryland, that’s the way it works,” BGE Spokesman Rob Gould said. “You spend the money and then you go back to the [Public Service] Commission and you ask them for recovery of the costs that you incurred.” BGE announced Friday evening that it had filed a request with the Public Service Commission (PSC) for a rate hike that, according to the utility, would add an additional $7.22 to the “typical” customer’s electric bill. There are a few places where BGE will use some of the money going forward, Gould said, including vegetation maintenance. “BGE customer bills will still be lower in total than then …

Areas still affected by last week’s storm.
Power in Laurel is slowly returning to homes and businesses left dark by a batch of violent storms that pummeled the region and left more than a million without power. Baltimore Gas and Electric estimated more than 10,000 customers throughout the Laurel area were left without power over the weekend. Large swaths of residences and businesses along Route 198, Route 197, and Route 1 were hard hit Friday night as strong winds, rain and thunder wreaked havoc in the region. The City of Laurel opened cooling centers and used patrol officers to do sweeps of traffic intersections and respond to emergency calls, said Careen Koubek, a spokesperson for the city. On Monday, Mayor Craig Moe declared a state of emergency for the city, following Gov. …

Crews are being brought in from Oklahoma and the Carolinas to assist in repairs, Pepco Region President Tom Graham said Sunday.
It may take more than a week to restore power across the region in the wake of Friday's violent storms, Pepco Region President Tom Graham told WTOP Sunday morning. "We're working as quickly and safely as we can for our customers, but it's hard work. … It's very labor intensive," Graham said in an on-air interview. According to Graham, Pepco's early efforts have been focused on assessment and repairing the supply lines that feed the utility's substations. "Now that those have been solidified—and those resources have really been behind the scenes, working on the property, restoring that service—now you'll see a greater presence in the community from those resources," Graham said. Graham also said that the utility was bringing in mutual …
