Burtonsville Doctor Convicted of Jack Johnson Bribes to Serve 18 Months

Dr. Mirza Hussain Baig will also pay a $50,000 fine and forfeit $250,000, according the Republic.

A Laurel-based doctor convicted of bribing former Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson was sentenced to 18 months in prison, the Republic reports. He will also pay $50,000 and forfeit $250,000, the website reported. Dr. Mirza Hussain Baig, 68, of Burtonsville pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion in connection with paying bribes to Jack Johnson and James Johnson, Patch reported last month. He faced up to five years in prison for the crime.  Baig, a physician who practices in Laurel, is president of Laurel Lakes Primary Care and a residential and commercial developer, according to the Washington Examiner.  He gave Johnson thousands of dollars between 2006 and 2010, including a cashiers check for $50,000 that Johnson did …

Video: Rushern Baker Applauds Boys and Girls Club

The Prince George's executive says it's the county's job to find funding for community nonprofit organizations.

  During a visit to the Laurel Boys and Girls Club this week, Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker said it is the county's responsibility to get funding for local nonprofits. Baker, who toured the facility for more than an hour on Wednesday, applauded officials at the club for offering programming to youth in the community despite its fiscal challenges. "The idea of today is to look around and see what needs to be done at the Laurel Boys and Girls Club, but it's all of our nonprofits that are seeking money from the county... cleary there is need," he said. Rushern Baker Tours Laurel Boys and Girls Club

Baker applauds board of directors, stresses need for aid to county non profits.

Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker stressed the need to aid county-based non-profits during a tour Wednesday of the Laurel Boys and Girls Club. Officials at the club invited Baker to the facility to see first-hands some of the conditions at the club, which have worsened in recent years due to lack of funding. Baker commended club officials for keeping the doors open despite the challenges it faced. "The idea of today is to look around and what needs to be done at the Laurel Boys and Girls Club, but it's all of our non profits that are seeking money from the county... Rushern Baker to Appear at Laurel Boys and Girls Club

County executive will tour facility on Wednesday.

Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker is expected to stop by the Laurel Boys and Girls Club Wednesday for a tour facility, according to the club’s director. Baker is set to appear at the club in the morning and will recognize the club’s contributions to the community. According to Levett Brown, the facility boasts the largest membership of any Boys and Girls Club in the region. Baker previously recognized the club in February for its contribution to the community and awarded the club a $7,500 grant.  However, Brown told Patch in April that the club would lose funding for its summer camp program because an annual fundraiser held at Laurel Mall was canceled this year due to the mall’s redevelopment.

State senator urges General Assembly to move past gambling during special session.

C. Anthony Muse, (D-Dist. 26) of Fort Washington. “The Only Gaming During a Special Session Should be Doubling Down on the People’s Business”   Whether you support casinos in Maryland or not, one thing is certain, the proposed expansion of gaming will have no direct impact on the fiscal year 2013 budget.  In fact, projected revenues from a proposed casino in Prince George’s County would not be realized for nearly six years, at best; and projected revenues from table games are a few years off as well. Further, the expansion of gaming hinges on the voters of Maryland agreeing to support the referendum, which some may say is likely, but there are no guarantees.  For these reasons, and many others, it…

More Walkable Communities Headed To Prince George’s

Council approves bill requiring more pedestrian-friendly development.

Could Prince George’s County soon be a more walkable community? This week, the county council approved legislation that would make new development friendlier to pedestrians and cyclists while making residents less reliant on cars and reducing safety risks for pedestrians, reports The Washington Post. The legislation would, for example, require pedestrian and bicycle connections to schools, parks, shopping and other destinations within a half-mile be installed in a new development if otherwise inadequate. Arrests Made in Guns, Marijuana Bust The Prince George’s County Police received a drug complaint for a residence in the 1700 block of Barrington Court, Bowie, MD, according to a police report. The District II Special Assignment Team and the Narcotic Enforcement Division conducted an investigation. A search and seizure warrant was obtained and executed on April 20.
