Combating Human Trafficking: A Team Approach

At the second annual Conference on Combatting Human Trafficking, the governor noted inter-agency cooperation was key to success.

New state-wide outreach programs have helped more than 15 child victims of human trafficking in the past five months alone, according to the governor’s office. Last year, nearly 80 victims received services from the state. Those numbers were some of the highlights of Monday's Second Annual Conference on Combating Human Trafficking in Maryland, in which more than 400 stakeholders and representatives of local, state and national organizations got together to discuss efforts to battle this crime, which is alive in Maryland. “Working together with all of our partners in law enforcement, we’ve assembled quite a collection of public servants and leaders in the fight against human trafficking,” Gov. 23 Arrested in Tri-County Prostitution Sting

The investigation involved five police organizations.

  Twenty-three men were arrested in a tri-county undercover prostitution sting along Route 1 in the Jessup area involving federal, state and local police agencies, officials announced Wednesday. The men were arrested last week in the vicinity of previous prostitution stings, according to Mary Phelan, a spokesperson for Howard County police. The Thursday arrests come about two months after police arrested ten men in a July prostitution sting along Route 1 in Laurel, one of whom included a high-ranking Food and Drug Administration official. FDA Official Pleads Guilty to Prostitution Charge, Gets One Day of Probation

William Maisel is one of three men who pleaded guilty to charges of soliciting prostitution during a sting carried out by the Howard County Police Department.

Dr. William Maisel, the cardiologist and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official charged by the Howard County Police Department in July with soliciting a prostitute, recently pleaded guilty in district court. Maisel is the deputy director of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), which has become embroiled in an employee-spying scandal. He received one day of probation and paid $257.50 in fees and courts costs, according to T. Wayne Kirwan, spokesperson for the Howard County State's Attorney's Office. Maisel's one day of probation ended on Friday, Sept. 21, according to Kirwan.   The Howard County Police Department announced Tuesday that 10 men were arrested in a reverse prostitution sting along the Route 1 corridor in North Laurel on Friday. Undercover female officers worked in areas where citizens have complained about prostitution, and arrested 10 men who approached them and offered money for sex, according to a statement from the department. This is the second reverse prostitution sting of 2012. Officers arrested eight men for soliciting prostitution in May. Police Bust Prostitution Ring on Route 1

Police charge eight men during the operation in North Laurel.

Howard County Police have arrested and charged eight men for soliciting prostitution along Route 1 in North Laurel, officials announced today. The arrests were the latest in the police department’s ongoing operation to eliminate prostitution along the Route 1 corridor. Howard County Police are continuing to utilize reverse prostitution to catch solicitors, they said. Police used female officers in plain clothes who worked undercover in areas targeted by citizen complaints. Suspects who approached the female officers and made such money offers were arrested, according to a press release. In total, eight men were arrested in charged, according to Howard County Police.
