Video: Rushern Baker Applauds Boys and Girls Club

The Prince George's executive says it's the county's job to find funding for community nonprofit organizations.

  During a visit to the Laurel Boys and Girls Club this week, Prince George's County Executive Rushern L. Baker said it is the county's responsibility to get funding for local nonprofits. Baker, who toured the facility for more than an hour on Wednesday, applauded officials at the club for offering programming to youth in the community despite its fiscal challenges. "The idea of today is to look around and see what needs to be done at the Laurel Boys and Girls Club, but it's all of our nonprofits that are seeking money from the county... cleary there is need," he said. Baker applauds board of directors, stresses need for aid to county non profits.

Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker stressed the need to aid county-based non-profits during a tour Wednesday of the Laurel Boys and Girls Club. Officials at the club invited Baker to the facility to see first-hands some of the conditions at the club, which have worsened in recent years due to lack of funding. Baker commended club officials for keeping the doors open despite the challenges it faced. "The idea of today is to look around and what needs to be done at the Laurel Boys and Girls Club, but it's all of our non profits that are seeking money from the county... Prince George’s Council Approves Baker Appointees

Council confirms picks for office of management, community relations.

The Prince George’s County Council this week approved County Executive Rushern L. Baker’s picks to head two important posts in county government. Council members gave passing votes to fill the position for the director of the Office of Management and Budget and director of the Office of Community Relations. Terri Bacote-Charles will head the Office of Management and Budget while Musa Eubanks will lead the Office Community Relations. Bacote-Charles will be paid an annual salary of $150,000 and Eubanks will be paid $135,000, according to a county spokesperson. Businesses Could Soon Benefit from Economic Development Fund

Businesses in the county could soon apply for loans and grants from the newly established Economic Development Incentive fund, The Gazette reported. The $50 million reserve will provide grants and loans to public and private sector businesses to spur economic development, job and business growth around developed areas and near transit lines, Patch reported last fall, when the plan was approved by the Prince George's County Council. Prince George’s County Exec Eyes Billion-Dollar Casino Complex

Rushern Baker says if gambling comes to county, it must be “world class.”

As a bill that would expand gambling in the state, particulary in Prince George’s County, works its way through the Maryland General Assembly, County Executive Rushern L. Baker said Thursday that he supports a $1 billion entertainment complex at National Harbor. “I have determined that if gaming comes to Prince George’s County, it must be a high-end facility. I believe we should develop a world-class destination facility that features gaming, live shows, dining, and lodging,” he said in a statement. “I envision a facility that attracts tourist, visitors, meetings and conventions from all over the world.” Baker’s comments come just days after the county council gave a thumbs-down vote to a proposed gambling bill in the General Assembly. …

Baker Warns of ‘Tough Choices’ in Economic Outlook for Prince George’s

"We're down to the bone," the Prince George’s County executive says.

Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker says that the county must brace itself for a projected $126 million deficit in the coming fiscal budget for 2013. Baker and officials from county government began a round of community forums this week to engage residents on the proposed $2.5 billion budget. The budget represents a 2.7 percent decline from the fiscal 2012 budget. Baker told a small crowd at Laurel High School Thursday that a decline in property tax revenues was largely to blame for the deficit of $126 million. Last year, he said, the deficit was only $77 million. “A lot of that has to do with a decrease in residential property [value],” he said. “It means we have tough choices that have to be made.” Baker said that the budget …

Rushern Baker to hold Budget Hearing in Laurel

Prince George's County Executive will be meeting with community members to discuss the county's 2013 budget .

Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker is set to hold his first meeting on the FY 2013 county budget at Laurel High School Thursday at 7 p.m. Baker will host a series of public hearings to engage citizens in a dialog about the budget amid an estimate $126 million shortfall. The hearings, which will be held in three locations in the northern, southern , and central parts of the County,  will be provided residents with an opportunity to give their input and opinions on the Prince George’s County FY 2013 budget.  Baker will use the feedback he receives from citizens during the hearings to help prioritize the county’s spending options for the upcoming year.       Citizens interested in testifying at these budget hearings need to …

Major Section of Intercounty Connector Opens Today

The extension will stretch the ICC from I-270/I-370 in Montgomery County to I-95 in Prince George's County.

The fresh blacktop of the $2.45 billion Intercounty Connector will open today at 6 a.m. after more than 50 years of debate and four years of construction. The section opening today will allow commuters to drive quickly from I-370 in Montgomery County to I-95 in Prince George's County. Now, all that's left to build of the 18.2 mile highway is a small stretch connecting I-95 to Route 1, which is set to begin construction later this year or early next year.
