Should School Buses Have Security Cameras?

Howard County is studying the issue.

As part of a $2 million effort to increase security in Howard County schools, Howard County officials say they will be studying the feasibility of installing security cameras on school buses. The deep look into school security comes in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut, when 20 first graders and six adults were killed in a grisly scene that has changed school security policies across the country. Among the recommendations in Howard County is to study whether it’s a good idea to place security cameras on school buses. The bus driver administered first aid to a 1 year old NOT belted in the car seat while the mother made calls on her cell phone? Anyone else have a problem with this? WHY wasn't the baby secured in the car seat, isn't it the law? Why wasn't the grandfather trying to shake some common sense into the mother instead of creating a scene in front of children? Josephine Grace Gay, 7, "Touched the Lives of So Many"

The parents of Josephine Gay remembered their daughter who was killed in the Sandy Hook school shooting on Friday, Dec. 14.

  The parents of Josephine Grace Gay, 7, remembered their daughter as a smiling, affectionate little girl who had an indomitable spirit and loved hugs, in a statement released Thursday. Gay, who was born in Columbia and lived in Howard County for three years before moving to Newtown, CT, was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting on Friday, Dec. 14. Gay had turned seven three days before the shooting and was looking forward to celebrating her birthday with her friends the day after the shooting, said her parents. County Schools Cautious After Sandy Hook Shooting

County schools are focusing on safety and support measures after the Connecticut school shooting.

Update - 5 p.m. - This post has been updated to include information about a new joint task force dedicated to identifying and dealing with possible violence. Howard County schools are focusing on safety and support measures in the wake of the deadly school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. On Monday, the school system reported it would hold staff meetings to review emergency plans at each school, discuss visitor policies and guideline reporting procedures for suspicious activity, according to a county statement.
