Letter to the Editor: Raising ICC Speed Limit an 'Insane Idea'

A letter to the editor about raising the speed limit on the Intercounty Connector and other state highways.

The following is a letter from Fred Flaharty, a Montgomery County school bus driver, in regards to a late January story about the Intercounty Connector potentially having a 70 mph speed limit: The bill that would raise the maximum speed limit on interstates and expressways statewide from 65 to 70 miles per hour is an incredibly BAD IDEA!....no...INSANE idea. As a regular daily driver of the ICC both in my personal car (twice per day) and as the driver of a Montgomery County school bus (4 trips per day) I protest in the strongest possible terms this proposed raising of the speed limit on the ICC. There are several important reasons for this the first of which is the road was never designed for faster speeds as are interstate highways. As is…

Lane Closures on I-95 This Weekend

Three lanes will be closed in Howard County for emergency road repairs.

Three lanes of Interstate 95 will be closed overnight Saturday for emergency road repairs, according to the State Highway Administration (SHA). The lane closures will affect the northbound side of the interstate between MD Route 216 (Scaggsville Road) and MD 32 in Howard County late Saturday, Jan. 19 and early Sunday, Jan. 20. SHA crews will be repairing a joint in the Middle Patuxent River Bridge, according a statement. PDI Sheetz, of Linthicum Heights, will be doing the repairs.  Although one lane will remain open, the SHA suggests US Route 1 (Washington Boulevard); US Route 29 (Columbia Pike); or MD Route 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) as alternate northbound routes.  To stay safe on the roads, SHA reminds drivers to stay alert …

SHA, BGE: Stay Off the Roads and Prepare for Outages

A windy wintry weather pattern leads state officials and BGE to urge caution, preparedness.

The State Highway Administration (SHA) and Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. (BGE) are warning residents that high winds, cold temperatures and icy roads may cause troubles Thursday.  The National Weather Service is forecasting freezing rain overnight into Thursday morning as well as fog and temperatures in the mid- to high-30s. Winds are expected to pick up speed into Thursday, when gusts could approach 50 mph.  "When you step out and see ice on your doorstep, you can assume that roads will be icy as well," SHA Administrator Melinda Peters said in a statement. Those icy conditions could make rush hour roads dangerous, according to the SHA, so crews will be hitting the streets early. “Stay off the roads early tomorrow morning, so that SHA …

SHA: Stay Off the Roads Early Thursday

Icy conditions could occur at the onset of the morning rush hour.

The Maryland State Highway Administration strongly urges motorists to avoid traveling early Thursday morning, especially before dawn. "Stay off the roads early [Thursday] morning, so that SHA crews have the opportunity to proactively treat roadways before morning rush hour," SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters said in a news release. "When you step out and see ice on your doorstep, you can assume that roads will be icy as well. Also remember that conditions can change rapidly within just a few miles, and we ask motorists to remain on guard and exercise extreme caution tonight and tomorrow morning." The SHA warns that those traveling during inclement weather and poor conditions pose a threat to themselves, first responders and other drivers…

NWS: Conditions 'Treacherous'

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for Howard County until 1 p.m. Wednesday as a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow moves through Maryland.  According to NWS, the wintry mix will continue through early Wednesday afternoon. With temperatures hovering in the upper 20s and lower 30s Wednesday morning and winds gusting up to 35 mph, the roads remain slick and travel conditions “treacherous.” The wintry mix should turn into all rain by this afternoon, according to NWS, as temperatures rise above freezing.  NWS expects precipitation to move off the coast early Thursday morning, leaving behind a dry, cold, windy day, which will “help to dry the region but do little to warm it up.” Wind speeds of 30 – 40 mph …

Poll: Should MD 32 Expand to Four Lanes Through Clarksville?

A recent fatal accident has brought the stretch of road between I-70 and 108 in Clarksville under examination.

After an Ellicott City man was killed in a fatal accident on Route 32 in Clarksville on Nov. 13 the safety of the high speed, two lane road has been called into question. Currently the stretch of road where the fatal accident occurred is a two-lane road that experiences traffic during rush hour. On Nov. 13, the fatal accident was caused by the driver of a flatbed truck losing control of the vehicle while driving southbound, skidding into the northbound lane and striking a Jeep driven by an Ellicott City man who later died at the hospital, according to police.  A Maryland State Highway Administration spokesperson said officials are still examining the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine exactly what happened. In 2004, a group…

Ever since they changed the time and cycle of the lights, getting to the 108 exit off of 32 is near impossible around 5-6 pm. The back up goes all the way down 32 and what used to take only a few minutes to get to the light at 108, now takes about 20. People stopping and going, slamming suddenly on brakes, there are going to be some bad accidents all due to what they have done to the timing of …   more ›

State Highway Administration Nudges Casino Officials for More Notice

Free gambling Wednesday caused highways around Arundel Mills to turn into parking lots, according to drivers.

Drivers on Routes 100 and I-295 were slowed to a crawl by Arundel Mills Wednesday around lunchtime, if they were lucky. Maryland Live! casino, located in Hanover, rang in the announcement of more than 1,000 additional slot machines by offering $100 in free gambling money to subscribers on its email list. More than 20,000 visitors came to the casino on Wednesday, according to Carmen Gonzales, Maryland Live! spokeswoman, who did not specify how many visitors the casino averaged daily. On opening night, the casino attracted more than 10,000 visitors. Route 100 near 295 was "an absolute nightmare," posted one user to Twitter on Sept. 12. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway "was a parking lot around noon," commented Patch user Brian C. that same …

As a resident in Severn, I have noticed that the roads all around the area are terrible all the time! I have a secret way to get home from work in Arbutus and it takes me 10 minutes, until I get to Telegraph road where the squeeze is before the reece road light. I sit there for 25-35 minutes everyday... LESS THAN A MILE FROM MY HOUSE!!!! I refuse to take 295 or 100 home because the traffic is so …   more ›

State Installing 'May Use Full Lane' Signage for Cyclists

The signs will be placed along highways with narrow lanes.

The Maryland State Highway Administration has begun installing signs along some roads in Prince George's and Montgomery counties emphasizing a cyclist's right to use the whole lane, Greater Greater Washington reports. The warnings are designed to clear up a common point of confusion among drivers and riders: whether cyclists should keep to the right edge of a lane and share it with motor vehicles, or whether they may use the full lane. In the case of narrow lanes, the blog notes, Maryland law permits bicycles to ride in the center—which is where the new signage comes in. The SHA installed nine such signs Tuesday along MD-953 in Glenn Dale, according to Greater Greater Washington, with more still to come. Other planned locations in Prince …

The new signs are not intended to change how cyclists ride. There are a lot of factors such as trees, mailboxes, driveways, the last car that passed way too close, speed, parked cars, etc that lead one to pick the safe lane position. These signs tell motorists that on that road the cyclist need not be far right . A Texas study found that drivers moved left 3 feet on average. One might think of …   more ›
