Howard County Schools Superintendent Renee Foose told a crowd of parents at a listen and learn session this week that she has asked her staff to re-examine redistricting plans, according to Explore Howard. At the forum Monday, one specific focus she addressed was the need to balance out the impact of poverty on schools being redistricted, wrote Explore Howard. A committee is scheduled to present its redistricting plan to the Howard County Board of Education later this month. The retirement of Deputy Superintendent Mamie Perkins is one of several changes to the Howard County Public School System this year.
Mamie Perkins, a Howard County Public School System employee of 26 years, announced her retirement as deputy superintendent on July 30 as the school system prepares for a realignment directed by the new superintendent Renee Foose. Perkins, who was interim superintendent for several months during Sydney Cousin's cancer treatment last year, said her plan was to retire after a new superintendent was fully transitioned, but before the new school year started, according to the Howard County Times. Her retirement became official on Aug. 1. The Prince George's County Board of Education has promised to include the community as it begins its search for a new superintendent.
The Prince George’s County Board of Education pledges in a letter to the community that it is committed to making sure residents are involved and informed as the search begins for a new superintendent. According to the county, Superintendent William Hite, who resigned a few weeks ago, has decided to forgo his six months of severance pay – around $125,000 – in order to bypass the 120-day notice provision in his contract, making his last day Sept. 30. Hite chose to forgo his severance in exchange for the early release in order to start his new position leading the Philadelphia School District sooner, said Briant Coleman, a spokesperson for Prince George's County Public Schools. The four-year, $250,000 annual contract for Howard County's new superintendent Renee Foose was unanimously approved Thursday.
The Howard County Board of Education formally approved superintendent Renee Foose’s contract at a reception on Thursday in Ellicott City. Foose was selected as the new superintendent on March 27. On Thursday, she signed a four-year contract that will pay her $250,000 annually, according to the Howard County Times. In addition, Foose will receive a $700 monthly vehicle allowance and $25,000 for relocation costs, according to the article. The Howard County Board of Education will vote on the school system's next superintendent on April 26, according to a statement issued Thursday. Current superintendent Sydney Cousin will retire at the end of June, and Deputy Superintendent for Baltimore County Public Schools Renee Foose will be voted on as his successor.
