Two Contract Areas Open on ICC Tuesday

Today the ribbon lay in two — tomorrow two major counties will be joined by one enormous roadway. At 6 a.m. Tuesday, the Intercounty Connector (ICC)/MD 200 is scheduled to make a giant expansion, connecting I-270/I-370 to I-95 near Laurel — opening up two additional contract areas of the ICC. In February 2011, the segment designated as Contract A opened, which connected the 5.65 mile segment from I-270/I-370 to Georgia Avenue in Rockville/Olney. Tomorrow an additional segment will open, mapped out as both Contract B and Contract C. The additional 10-mile segment will pick up where the last segment left off, at Georgia Avenue, extending the east end of the ICC all the way to I-95. Weigh In: Should Maryland Transportation Officials Increase Tolls?

Part of the proposed increases would help pay for the Intercounty Connector, designed to reduce congestion in D.C. and Baltimore suburbs.

Residents across the state will have the opportunity to weigh in on whether transportation officials should raise tolls to pay for road and bridge repairs, as well as new highways, such as the controversial Intercounty Connector. The estimated $2.56 billion Intercounty Connector, or ICC, is a high-tech roadway designed to reduce commuting times for suburban Baltimore and Washington, D.C. dwellers. Opponents such as The Coalition for Smarter Growth have said the project is too expensive and puts a burden on the environment. The Maryland Transportation Authority will hold nine public hearings this month on the toll increase proposal, expected to generate $77 million in its first fiscal year for the state agency that operates Maryland’s toll …

I wonder if this technology they use on the ICC to collect tolls without a toll booth can be transfered to all streets. That way you would pay for the streets that you use. It could encourage public transportation or increase use of other modes of transit such as biking or walking. Lots of people say they don't get services for their taxes - they have no idea how expensive roads are to build and …   more ›
