City officials are reviewing plans for the Towne Centre at Laurel, where building is expected to begin in late March or April.
Other than a Burlington Coat Factory and a few leveled fields, there's not much to see these days at the former home of Laurel Mall. But if all goes according to plan, the Towne Centre at Laurel—an open-air retail and residential plaza—will start to take shape at the site in the next month or two. So far, there are three confirmed tenants for the development: a Harris Teeter grocery store, a Regal Cinemas movie theater, and a new Burlington Coat Factory store, which will be built closer to the McDonald’s at the east end of the site. Authorities say they're investigating the theft of some $90,000 in equipment and scrap metal from a construction site at the former location of Laurel Mall. According to Laurel police, officers responded to the scene in the 14800 block of Baltimore Ave. around 6:06 a.m. Sunday. A supervisor told police that five large dumpsters full of scrap metal had been stolen from the job site. Two large building chillers—each about 5 feet by 12 feet by 25 feet—are also missing, police said, along with several other tools and machines. Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact the Laurel Police Department at 301-498-0092. Developers introduce conceptual plans to Town Centre at Laurel to city council.
Conceptual plans to transform Laurel Mall into the Town Centre at Laurel have officially been introduced to the Laurel Council. Developers for the project presented renderings of what the project will look like once completed in 2012 to the council, during a meeting Monday night.
