Friends, Teachers Honor Memory of Slain Honors Student

Those who knew her flooded Twitter and social media sites to express their sorrow at the death of Amber Stanley, who was gunned down by an intruder while in her bedroom.

A gunman entered 17-year-old Amber D. Stanley’s home on Chartsey Street Wednesday night and shot and killed her in her bedroom. Stanley was a senior honors student at Charles H. Flowers High School and according to WUSA9, had dreams of attending Harvard University next year. Police told The Washington Post it’s likely the gunman had planned to kill someone specific because he or she did not take anything from the home and fled immediately after the shooting. However, they said it’s not clear whether the gunman entered the wrong home or bedroom. The Post reported that Stanley was a studious, seemingly shy student who tutored her peers and aspired to become a doctor – she was enrolled in Flowers’ Science and Technology program, which admits …

Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services will officially be using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to update the community.

Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS) officially announced it would be using social media sites to inform the community. The department said in a news release it would be using the sites to provide information on fires, special events, disasters and weather emergencies. "We're excited to use our social media presence to foster a more informed and engaged citizen base," said Fire/EMS Chief William Goddard in a release. Department officials have already been active on their social media accounts. For example, on Twitter they let people know a train car that derailed was not carrying hazardous materials. Ulman Forum: Readers React

Reader responses ranged from supporting the county executive to raising further questions on county issues.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman held his sixth public forum this week, and public safety drove much of the conversation, in light of the shootings in Aurora, CO. Ulman said during the Monday event the police department has "redoubled" efforts in communication plans after every such incident, as communities around the country seek to learn from the tragedy. Reader responses ranged from supporting the county executive to raising further questions on county issues. Patch reader Adam R said he didn't like Ulman's response to the questions about the Colorado shootings, saying: "Why can't you just say the truth that [Howard County] is doing everything they can to keep its citizens safe every night with the budget constraints of running a large…

It's true about Ian Patrick Hines.. Google him. You'll see that he was a spokesperson for the O'Malley administration. He's not a hoco citizen coming to the forum to objectively discuss issues; he's a highly partisan Glen Burnie resident visiting our county specifically to troll for Ken Ulman.   more ›

Twitter Confusion on Obamacare

The county reacts on social media after initial reports botched the Supreme Court Ruling on "Obamacare."

The Twitter nation waited and watched for the Supreme Court ruling on President Obama's healthcare act Thursday morning. Seconds after the ruling was released, the social media outlet exploded in confusion. Early reports from CNN said the Affordable Care Act had been struck down, the Associated Press reported that the law had been upheld, some claimed it was too early to have a correct analysis. Read more about Prince George's leaders' reactions to the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the ACA.

Agree with Pachacutec. It was Fox and CNN that got it wrong because they only looked at the first page of the decision before spouting off. Heads should roll. I would hope that they would learn their lesson, but they won't. We should ridicule them as much as possible so maybe, just maybe, they will change their ways.   more ›

Ray Rice Moved by Stories of Bullying

"You're not alone in this world," the Baltimore Ravens running back told victims of bullying at a Ray of Light event in Ellicott City.

Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice had his own problems as a kid, which might have been what made what he said at an anti-bullying event especially poignant. In the audience was the family of Grace McComas, the 15-year-old Glenelg student who took her own life on Easter after constant harassment in school and on social media. Rice was at Howard High School Saturday to address a Ray of Light anti-bullying event organized by Howard County Councilman Calvin Ball after two Howard County students committed suicide this school year. "To think about somebody getting picked on and somebody losing their life–that really struck a nerve in my body in my soul and eveything that I stand for," Rice told the crowd of more than 300 students, …

Grieving Community Stages Demos Against Bullying

A "freeze mob" on Tuesday at Howard High was one of several events aimed at bringing awareness to the emotionally charged topic.

After Glenelg student Grace McComas, 15, killed herself on Easter Sunday, her friends began a movement called "Blue4Grace" in which they wore blue at her wake to take a stand against bullying. Grace's parents said she was harassed online for months, according to The Baltimore Sun. "Can children not take a minute and realize they’re killing each other over petty things?" wrote one commenter on the Blue4Grace page. Students at Howard High School took more than a minute on Tuesday. Time stood still between second and third periods as they collectively paused during what is called a "freeze mob" while the song "Lean on Me" played. The demonstration is one of several events in Howard County over the next two weeks to combat bullying. Eugene …

ralahinn1, the Ravens did good this season, no doubt, but all plans were for them to go to the Super Bowl and they almost did it. But this year's Ravens won the big games and lost the easy ones. This time they lost the big game by blowing the easy plays.   more ›
