Horizon Awards $160,000 in Grants To Healthy Howard, PATH, Columbia Association

Organization focuses on local initiatives dedicated to reducing obesity, increasing access to healthcare.

  Horizon Foundation announced Tuesday it was awarding $160,000 in grants to local programs dedicated to reducing obesity and promoting healthy lifestyles. The Columbia nonprofit awarded $40,000 to Healthy Howard, Inc. in order to help the organization direct uninsured clients to health benefits as part of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Horizon awarded $45,000 to PATH (People Acting Together in Howard) to bring together local leaders to fight sugary drink consumption, one of the leading causes of obesity, according to Horizon. In addition, Columbia Association received $40,000 to support their "Let's Get S.A.S.S.Y." after school program, which encourages students to be successful, active, smart, strong youth by making …

Movies on the Lakefront: Muppets, Pirates, Cars and More

The Columbia Association has two movies scheduled for every week this summer.

  The Summer Lakefront Festival kicked off in June, but the Columbia Association still has 21 family-friendly movies lined up for the summer evenings by the lakefront. Twice weekly, families are invited to bring snacks and enjoy some entertaining film on a big screen next to Lake Kittamaqundi for free. Glass containers and alcoholic beverages are prohibited. All movies start at 8 p.m. at the Columbia Lakefront, and the next movie is Friday, July 13. Up to 50,000 Expected to Attend Columbia Fireworks

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will kick off the festivities at 5 p.m. and fireworks begin at dusk at Lake Kittamaqundi.

  If you're thinking about heading out to Howard County's celebration of America's birthday, then make sure you plan to get there early, but not too early. Phil Bryan, special events coordinator for the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, said the county is expecting between 30,000 and 50,000 people to attend the fireworks at Lake Kittamaqundi in Columbia. The lakefront area will open at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 4, for people to begin to put breathable blankets or sheets down on the grass. At 3 p.m., people can begin to put down tarps, according to the Columbia Association. "Anything prior to that and the Columbia Association will remove them," said Bryan, who noted the CA wants to keep the grass at the lakefront healthy. …

(Updated) Columbia Association Offers Free Entry to Pools

With thousands without power and extreme heat descending on Howard County, the Columbia Association has invited residents to use their outdoor pools for free.

  The Columbia Association announced it would be allowing all Howard County residents still without power to use its outdoor pools free of charge on Saturday and Sunday. Pools are open from noon to 7 p.m. Howard County residents interested in utilizing this opportunity can check the CA aquatics website to find a pool closest to them. Also, The Supreme Sports Club is still without power and therefore will remain closed today, July 1.
