Columbia Commercial Armed Robbery and Burglary - Extended Stay America A hotel located near the 8800 block of Stanford Blvd. was robbed by two masked men, one armed with a shotgun, on Dec. 21 around 10 p.m. According to police, the men entered the hotel wearing ski caps, bandanas and gloves and demanded money from the clerk, who turned it over. Police described the men as two black males, one wearing a black ski cap, a bandana, blue sweatshirt, faded jeans and black shoes who was armed with a shotgun. The second man had a bandana and was wearing a white t-shirt over a gray sweatshirt with dark gloves and blue jeans. Extended Stay was also struck by burglars. Columbia Robbery A group of seven males on bikes confronted a man in the Oakland Mills Village Center on Dec. 7 at about 9:45 p.m. according to police. Two of them grabbed the man’s jacket and told him to go with them, according to police. The man said he tried to walk away from the group, but they followed him. One of the members of the group hit the man with his bicycle as he told him to hand over his money according to police, then he pulled the man’s jacket off of him, reached into the man’s pants pocket and took his wallet. The suspects are described as a group of seven black males between the ages of 17 and 20. Four of them were slim and three were muscular. One was wearing a black ski mask and all seven were wearing dark clothes. …

Police said the holiday period has a high incidence of alcohol-related traffic fatalities.
Howard County Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the county this weekend. Police said the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's has a high incidence of alcohol-related traffic fatalities, with about 25 people per day being killed nationally in impaired-driving crashes. The checkpoint is one of several that have occurred throughout the year. A checkpoint on Route 1 in North Laurel in August netted five arrests and one in Columbia on MD 175 eastbound in March led to the arrest of two people. Twenty-five percent of the county's fatal collisions in 2011 were alcohol-related, according to police. In 2011, police arrested 1,391 individuals for driving under the influence.
